Hi, I'm really new to this SEO thing and I'm hoping to get some traffic from search engines some day. I guess that the first thing to do is choose keywords. I'm never really sure how to do this. I've used those tools that give you suggestions and stuff but I always get irrelevant keywords. Can someone help me out. My site is in my sig.

I don't mind if you link me to a blog post of yours. I could use all the help I can get :p

    Thanks in advance.

edit: I'll post what I have in my meta tags here:

<META NAME="keywords" CONTENT="web site design, internet web site design, web site design company, best web site design, web site design development, free web site design, small business web site design, free web templates, development, xhtml, doDesign, free web design">

They are all good but you need to have them in the content of your page.
You need links ( with anchor text matching your keywords ) pointing to your site and plenty of original, keyword rich content. So far, Google AdSense is the only "keyword rich content" i can see there..

Without the content and back links you can't expect to be in the SERP.
Stuffing meta tags will not make this happen either.

Do not stuff your pages with too many keywords. Target 1-3 per page.

Thanks a lot for the advice! The only problem is that the way the site is designed, I really have no idea where to place content with the keywords. Maybe I should have a different home page with news and such (still putting small design previews) and set the current homepage to dodesign.us/viewall/ . Anyone think that would work?

Create your content using your targeted keywords. And use h1, bold on your keywords. use alt tag on images. Use your targeted keywords as anchor text.

search for the most commonly searched keywords in your field using the OVERTURE tool. With that, you will have a good idea of how popular certain phrases are and you can target specific phrases for your site.

Advice is, don't try to fight for the most searched phrase as it is probably laden with big boys with their heels dug in. You'll be fighting a losing battle with them. Target the more specific phrases that will likely get you more targeted visitors that will purchase products and it will also be easier for you to climb to the top with these phrases.

    Good luck.....
