    That's right! Go to Google Webmaster and read up on their guidelines to rank first on their search engine. I remember they have this PDF report on you can optimize your site for the Google Search Engine. That would really give you the basics, from there on you can go to SEOMoz. They have excellent tutorials for beginners.
