I'm new to seo, anywase I need to know with link exchanges, do I need to recipricate the link on my main index page? Or if I recipricate it on another page will it still be just as good to whoever i'm recipricating for?

the reason I ask is becuase I run an affiliate site with a template, so adding links to the main page doesn't look good.

Let me explain the basics of link exchanging and terminology as best I can to you.

Link exchange: To exchange links on websites with related content. (ex. I link to you, you link to me)

    1. Link exchanges are mostly only useful if they are hard links, meaning they are direct to the site don't proxy through a traffic script.

    2. If you link on the main page, they'll link on the main page. If you link on a internal page, they'll link on an internal page.

The link exchange deal is almost the deal between you and the person your exchanging links with, you both decide the terms.

Well its a good think I only exchange links with related content, review sites I exchange with and turn down sites that I feel would have a negative impact on my site.

Link exchanges are good. They work, but you have to know how to work them.

I just wrote a big long link exchange blog post over at my new blog. here is an exerpt:

    1. Don’t put the link on your homepage. Why would you want to do that? It doesn’t help your human visitors, it doesn’t help your site maintain traffic, it often won’t appear in the body of the text so a search engine may identify it as purchased and strip it of its ‘link juice anyway. So what’s the point? Stear clear of link exchangers asking for a link on your homepage.

    2. Make sure the link is relevant. And I can’t stress this enough. Get sites linking to you that have to do with what you’re selling. If you can’t imagine someone coming from your link partner’s site and possibly making a sale on yours, it’s not worth it.

    3. Don’t only judge a link by its Pagerank. Instead, do this as well. Go to yahoo(it won’t work with Google) and type in linkdomain:www.linkpartnersite.com -site:linkpartnersite.com. Record the number of results that Yahoo returns. Is that number respectable, or higher than the number of results Yahoo returns for you site? Yes? You want that link. Pagerank will tell you if the links page has been flagged as crap. The number of domain links will tell you if it’s worth your while.

    4. Link outside the box. Links pages are crap. If the search engines didn’t exist, would you want a link on someone’s crappy links page, 2 links from the bottom on a list of 80? Of course not. So think of better ways than a plain Jane links page to entice your potential partners to link to you. For example, write an article about an industry opinion or study that you have, get some links to it, and maybe even get it ranking for a long-tail keyword. Now email your link partners offering them a link on that article in the ‘relevant resources’ section of the page and be sure to mention it’s finer points including traffic and ranking in the SERPs. All of the sudden, people will want to link to you, and you can even stipulate how they do it.

good points mtb167 but why not putting a link on the homepage if it's relevant?
Sometimes, it's good to build a good relationship between websites and if links are relevant, it can be useful for both sites.
And if the partner is putting your link at a good spot, why wouldn't you do that?

Just don't overbook your homepage with links.

The way I see it, those links of yours must be organized. Meaning, they don't have to be projected all in one big link section if you have it on your main page. Maybe it will be nicer if the links has limited quantity or has its own page to look neat.

Hey. Rules were made to be broken, right? And there is an exception to every one. So yes, in some cases it may be beneficial to place a link on the homepage of your website to a link partner's page.

But for an ecommerce site, or brochureware kind of site, the homepage is all about branding who you are and driving traffic toward conversion. If the purpose of your homepage is to drive traffic toward conversion (sale, contact us, etc) then a link to a partner's site will only take away from that goal.

Maybe you are a web design site, but you only do Joomla design, and you have a partner that does all kinds of design. Maybe you put a link to your partner's site on the homepage then to filter out extraneous leads, but for brochureware, ecommerce or any site which is focused on driving conversions, I wouldn't recommend placing a link on it.

I sent emails out to about 50 sites, similiar to my sites hoping to recipricate links in relevant area's on the site (kind of hard for me to to do since I run a pharmacy affiliate template site)...

1 reply which was no, and i'm guessing the rest won't even bother...

so basically, if your not friends with people who have high ranked pages, you don't get links to your site... not to mention for some reason my affiliate (rxpayouts) charges an arm and a leg for all medicine... it's nearly impossible to beat any competition... why would someone pay 105 for something they could pay 60 for... and all the 60's are on the front pages of the search engines.

pretty shitty man, I don't think this is going to go anywhere
