I'm not sure if it's a "quality" backlink in the way that - I believe ezines are -, but it can get websites indexed quickly. Be wary about submitting every blog post -that could easily be perceived as spamming and get you banned. Others may correct me, but I would say submit ONE link to your entire blog per social news site (digg, mixx propeller etc and make sure you vote for/against other news items submitted and even submit general news items that have no relevance to your own blog.

I believe that social bookmarkling sites (eg oyax ma.gnolia) are more tollerant of you submitting each page whereas social news sites like digg have a far lower tollerance of spam.

Since Digg is using shorten URL, IMO it is certainly useful to drive traffic to your site but the shorten URLs don’t provide good link juice.

Digg will give you a bl, but I wouldn't rely on social media sites for backlinks. They are better for traffic, which caN TURN into real backlinks based on the merit of your content...so I guess in a way, yes you can get nice backlinks as a direct result of dig. Keep on doing your thing...but build manual links as well, dont rely on automatic approval type links.
