New to forums a few questions.

    Hi,

    I have knowledge of html and basic SEO, but other than that i'm fairly new to this so forgive the simplicity of the questions.

    1. I am creating a site that will have a main site a blog, but prodominantly a forum. I wondered the best software to use for the forum? both in terms of functionality, flexability, but also it needs to fairly easy to config for a newbie.

    2. I have had experience in SEO, so know the basics, but i wondered if there are any additional tips for getting people to post on the forum and initially getting people to sign up?

    3. I am curious to how much money is realistically posible to earn from a similar type project? i understand that this will vary, but can anyone give me any clues from personal experiences?

    1) Assuming you aren't paying, try phpBB. But if you are wanting paid software, then you can't go wrong with vBulletin.

    2) Hold contests, create some kind of motivation for users to sign up and post. I don't think anything beats opening a forum then opening it with a great contest.

    3) Earn money off of a forum you mean, or some other site? You can make money off selling ad space, joining some kind of affiliates program, it's almost limitless. But there aren't any guarantees.

    yepp...vBulletin is best one i think for paid, and another gud one for paid is IPB..but i think vBulletin has better skins (the way it looks basically)

    If you are paying I would recommend vBulletin, but I would recommend phpBB as a free software.

    Thanks guys, i think i'm going to test out PHPbb.

    When i talk about the earnings, i just wanted to try and get an idea of earnings/traffic ratio of a typical forum. Or if anyone has any specific examples.

    e.g. forum xyz have 1000 active users, 20000 posts a month. it earns approx "x" from adsense, or ad space or what ever per month.

    I have tried phpbb, and have found that installing mods is not as easy as installing plugins in wordpress.

    how is it in vbulletin? is it as easy as that, or should we edit files and insert code and stuff?

    Different mods require editing or not to edit anymore, it depends on the mods you are going to use anyway. Since I am a vbulletin user I found it easy to install inclusing those mods which requires editing of template, etc..

    I have never used V bullettin so cant comment on that,but I have used phpbb once you learn how to edit mods you can do it in 5 mintues flat.. but if you lazy or super busy that you cannot spend even 5 mintues then you should go for VB:D

    1. Vbulletin has on their modification's site a bridge between wordpress and other scripts.

    2. With vbulletin, you can get vBSEO, but there are free alternatives, although in the grand scheme, they don't not compare.

    3. I have spent around $400. Though, I am making the money back very quickly.

    vBulletin is the best paid forum software. SMF is the best free forum software. Period.

    I highly recommend SMF for a free forum software. SMF does not eat so much resources from your server. Its security protection stands better than other free forum softwares. I am using it in all my forum sites.

    I wish to use SMF too, but but some MODS are not working if i use any custom theme.
    I tried to use ad-management MOD in VOUGE theme. Also edited the code, but i was not able to do it :(
    BTW...SMF is good and easy to use.

    For a free forum platform it's always between phpBB and SMF. The thing is SMF is really easy to use and install midifications. phpBB takes some time to learn but if you master it, it's great. I'm currently running a forum on phpBB and I'm really happy and satified with it.
