Hi people! Like many of you round here, ive been bitten by the adsense bug. I've just started up a new site on fitness and i was looking for tips to improve the ranking of my site. I'm just wondering, after readin the email google sent me after i signed up, it said: Please note that you might not maximise your earnings from AdSense if you have any of the following on your website: * robots.txt but i've read that for search engines to be able to look round your site more effeciently you should have a robot.txt file I'm also wondering about meta tags. Is it better to have more meta tags that describe your site, or does it not matter. Any advice would be appreciated! thanks Ste www.improvingyourfitness.co.uk
Why is is so skinny. At least design for 800 x 600. The first thing my eyes go to is the google ad. Whenever I run across a site like this my next click is the back button. Try some link units across the top. Let the visitor at least get in the door before you hit them on the head with the large rectange ad.
I think you should change your website design. The background color is too strong... Also try to change the main ad at the top of your page to another location, like in a middle of articles but not like the current location. If you want the ad in the current location, change the ads size to something like 468X60.
Hi peeps, i just heard people say put your ad on the top half of your page thats all. What you say makes sense tho, if the first thing people see is adverts then yeah, they probably gonna click back. Buildhome- the background color is too strong. i would like to change it but im using a template so its gonna take me a while to do that.... however i think that'll be my working progress Thanks for the comments trippen, BH
Most crawlers ignore meta tags at this point. It's good to have for those older search engines that you still want to be linked from. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but Altavista used to score very heavily based on meta tags. Now if you want to create a robots.txt file, just place one in the root level of your domain. To allow for the AdSense crawler to have access, place these lines up at the top. User-agent: Mediapartners-Google* Disallow: If you want the AdSense crawler to stay away from certain areas, such as 'cgi-bin/' then you can insert such directories and files after 'Disallow:' Please reply if you need clarification.
Altavista uses Yahoo, so there is no point in meta-tags for the crawlers. The only meta-tag that still has a purpose, is meta-description. Google sometimes uses it for the description under your link in the serps. I have a site ranking #1 in Altavista. The site does not ANY meta tags as far as I remember. Nowadays, it is all about inbound links - and the anchor text of the links.
