You can be certain that the Russian mafia is behind a large share of this type of spamming. It is easy low risk money. I'd be shocked if they weren't involved.

Where are you, in the movie?
If Google would be in 80s you’ll say commies are spamming?
    Please get rid of cliché.

I think Bundy needs a reality check! This is the REAL world here and now man , NOT the 80's which you are no doubt still living in! BIG $ attracts CRIMINALS and the internet is prime hunting grounds. How do you think the f'ing terror cells get their $!! So wake up and get a grip on REALITY in 2006. One more thing . If the internet was around in the 80' the commies as you so put WOULD have exploited it as much as they could. How do you know they are not now?

I reside in Moscow; my reality check is beginning and coming to the end by sticking my head in window. I don’t need to read newspapers stuffed with Russian mafia crap.

And please don’t bring in “terror card”; it’s a real problem and too many people riding this horse just for the dispute.

So Bundy, are you saying there is no Russian Mafia? Or that organized crime wouldn't get involved with schemes involving computers?

No I'm not in a movie, and I have nothing against Russians. Most of my friends are Russians or from the former Soviet republics. Even my wife is Russian. The fact is that if the scrapers are coming out of Russia than in all likelihood they are being controlled by the Russian mob. Right now the Russian mob has the control and influence in Russia that the Italian mafia had in Italy 20 years ago.

Another thing is that many of the computer virus outbreaks that had the purpose of creating zombie networks have been traced back to the Russian mob by law enforcement and computer security firms. To successfully scrape sites on as large of scale as is happening today requires lots of computers. This means one needs access to zombie networks.

Are all scraper sites run by the Russian mafia? No they are not; however, I'm certain that many are. After all, it is easier and safer to get money this way than it is using traditional methods employed by crime syndicates.

Why this talk about russia. The spammers are everywhere, one guy with one computer can make 100.000 pages a day, and he does. You dont need a big network to make 10.000.000 pages. Most of the spam on the net today is made by individuals with a very good knowledge on how to make scripts. Everything, from register domains to make content to blog about the sites can be automated.

Let’s cut it here. My quirk was toward this quote:
“Could it be possible that the Russian Mafia is behind these huge coordinated spamming attacks in Google”...
...and linkage of spamming to organized crime.

As chowbow correctly said it’s all made by individuals. Believe me spamming isn’t of Mafia’s top priority.

You obviously don't read the news. They Russian mafia is very much into cyber crime and they control some pretty big bot networks.

Yes some SERP spamming is done by individuals; however, as you pointed out the question was could the Russian mafia be behind huge coordinated spamming attacks. The answer is yes they could and are behind some of this type of spamming. The Russian mafia, like any mafia is into finding the easiest ways possible to make money. Cyber crime, SE spamming, email spamming, etc. is a low risk (not likely to get shot or caught), low cost (doesn't require significant capital investment), means of making money. Since SE spam is a "victimless" activity and with no real laws against it, this is a perfect activity for organized crime. Why shake down your corner bakery when you can release a zombie network to scrap websites, use countless PPC affiliate accounts and sit back and watch the money roll in.

We know from tech news sites that the Russian mafia is disseminating computer viruses that recruit computers for their zombie networks. The only reason they would be creating these zombie networks is if there was profit to it. That profit comes from email spam, SE spam and shaking down website operators via threats of DDoS attacks.

To scrape millions upon millions of webpages and to produce billions of SE spam pages takes a lot of computing power. To acquire such computing power requires a coordinated effort to build zombie networks or commandeering existing networks. Either way it is easier for a organized group to do this than it is for individuals. Are the Russian mafias alone at doing these types of activities? No they aren't, but there is a growing body of evidence that they are very active in it. If you don't believe me, then you need to be doing a better job of keeping up on tech news via sites like CNet News, Infoworld, etc.

I think it is very sloppy and irresponsible to try and tie everything back to terrorists. Terrorists use a bathroom; does that make everyone who uses a bathroom a terrorist?

I'm certain many different types of groups with the technical abilities required use things like SE spam to generate revenue. No one group has an exclusive on a specific "illegitimate" revenue generating scheme.

I was kinda' hoping that with all the changes Google has made during the last 2-3 months that most spam sites would be gone by now, but as usual I found another one with scraped content.
this one 3jq5b.info has been around for a while and the cache is from May but it shouldn't be there at all if you ask me :(
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=site%3A3jq5b.info&btnG=Search

So have Google REALLY done anything at all but screw up our sites?

You have numerous sites like that, a few examples (these are only 5 of thousands domains from the same spammer):

    1km672.info
    48p94b.info
    jjj62r.info
    rz3w9.info
    c3lo13.info

All the mentioned domains has ten thousands sub domains ranking for different keywords in google, all sites resolves to t1ps2see.com witch has alexa rank around 9000.

    Google seach, site:rz3w9.info
These should have been removed from google in march as thats the time they were reported, they have also been repoted in the meantime and are still there.
Sorry I dont want to trash up the thread by outing sites here, but my big question is

WHY ARE THEY STILL IN THE INDEX ??

I mean, after getting two reports in 6 months Google has actively not removed them. There must be a reason for this.

I think whois might be all you need to see if the SPAMers are from Russia, unless they fake da address or pay to have a fake address.

Atleast they don't have 3,780,000,000 results!!! A few thousand is MUCH better than that!!!

Well, Google has been crawling, several hundred pages of mine a day, the #s jump around, but keep going back to about 3 months ago. I change my URL scheme, use all 301 redirects.

I haven't seen ONE new indexed page in google in about 3 months, not a single one. All the caches are back from May. It's as if they keep resetting it, back to a previous state. Those sites may have been taken out, or probably will be, but it's like they keep rolling back the data, maybe they are testing and retesting, trying to get the spam filters right, I don't know. Who knows what they are doing behind the scenes.
