Im putting together a new site.

Should or shouldnt I submit it to the search engines. I have heard that Google will find a new site on it's own.

    Thanks

Create a xml sitemap & submit it Google webmaster tool. Also submit your site in some social bookmarking site. It will help to get index your site...

No need to submit on SE, you can create xml site map and submit to webmaster tools.

search engines would find the websites on their own, thats what their job is.
its good practice to submit on google webmaster tools though, you can specify some options there, and check how they are looking at your site.

i would suggest working on link building for a new website.

You need to register your URL with google so they can crawl your site.

Google and the other bots can find your site on their own.

To all the replies that pushed an xml sitemap:
About Sitemaps - Google Webmaster Central

Plus, only certain search bots use the xml sitemap.

A better way is to include an HTML site map. This traditional site map is good for your visitors and all search bots.

To say one must set up a Webmasters Tools account is questionable. There are lots of people who don't know about it (or can't figure it out for some reason) that get indexed.

    From personal experience:
    1. Google has found more than one of my sites that weren't really ready to be "discovered" or not submitted while it's bot was "visiting" a web server.
    2. A single link from an established site (preferrably one that gets visited frequently) works too.

If you mean submit to Google directly then it is useless. It would be better if you signed up for Google Webmaster Tools, get your website verified and submit sitemap to them. Another way is build some links toward your website and Google will follow that links then include your website at last.
