I just started a new site and am wondering if there is something special I need to do with a brand new site? I'm doing the normal blog posting, forums sig/profile links, article writing and all that but is there something extra to get the ball rolling so to speak?

What sort of market are you catering to? If there's a local market - then the best place to start is right at home - signup on Google Places & Bing Local. Then start seeking citations from major local directories (yelp, yellowpages, brownbook, merchantcircle, etc). If you have customers - get reviews. Once you start getting in some local traffic, then take a look through your analytics data - find the keywords that are bringing in traffic, and develop those areas.
