Keep building backlinks to the site, making your site a success won't happen over night and could take a few months to achieve any sort of success.
Submit to directories, link exchange with websites that are relevant to yours, comment on other relevant sites and put your url as your name or whatever, but don't spam them and put your link in your signature in gaming forums etc.

For SEO you need a good, and quality keyword rich content and back links you can create some content which people like and refer your website from their own websits or blog. this way you can create number of healthy links
How do you know that nothing has come out of it? Have you analyzed your rankings outside the 1st page, before you started with SEO and now? Even if your site is not on the 1st, 2nd etc page doesn't mean its not moving in that direction, and then you don't want to stop what you are doing
I think, you should go for relevant forums to exchange links and directories submissions will help in order to gain traffic from web.
