Hi have a new site that I'm still working on before I start getting links.

Its been indexed in Google??? No backlinks??????

    Not indexed in Yahoo.

    Now I'm really confused.

Maybe they are using browsing data from the toolbar to help find new sites?

I don't know how they do it but it happens to me all the time.

If I want it listed they don't and if I don't they do.

I am doing all my developement stuff on my desktop using localhost now to avoid the problem.

I dont really see it as a problem. If G wants to start maturing the domain while I touch it up, all the better.

The site you mention is not a new site, its been indexed in that past, it may not have any backlinks now but the domain has history and dates back to 2002

Its not a surprise at all. I remember back in May/June last Year- Matt Cutts was talking about Google's new indexing feature that could index contents of established sites in mins.

I believe, Google's algo is much more faster in finding new sites than other SEs.

if it's indexed , there must be backlinks. it's possible that you did not find the current backlinks of that site

A site cant be indexed if there are no backlinks or you didnt submit it to Google manually.
I had a site for more than 6 months online, no backlings - nothing and it was not in the index.

Sorry. That just isn't right. I bought a domain and put up a single holding page, never linked to it or even told anyone I owned it. Two weeks later it was listed.

I put up unlinked test pages on domains and find them listed.
