It's not new, and anyone who says otherwise is either trying to sell you a bridge in Brooklyn or some other form of snake oil.

It's basically multi-word phrases, such as "how to apply for a credit card online" that people search for in order to find something specific.

Here's an illustration of a long-tail keyword phrase. I copied-and-pasted the following random phrase from my home page into a Google search: "This website is intended to be a helpful resource". In between " " marks it comes up #1, as expected.

Try doing that with several randomly chosen snippets from your home page and see how they come up in a Google search. Often they will be on the first page. The downside, of course, is that not too many people are generally searching for that exact phrase. The upside is that some may be searching for it, and you are likely to get a click from them.

That will give you an idea of how long-tail phrases work in search. Weave your main keyword(s) into meaningful, longer phrases. You'll still be competing in search for those main keywords, and you may pick up a smaller but meaningful number of surfers searching for the longer phrase. For example, say my keywords are "real estate" (just an example; they are not). If I include in the text of the page the phrase "buying and selling real estate", I have still included my main keywords, but I may also score much higher in the SERPs for the longer phrase and may pick up the smaller number of people searching for that longer phrase.

Long tailed words have less search, but if they're the right phrases, they can bring in better traffic. For example, if you optimize for the keyword 'real estate' (which is very difficult because it's so competitive), a visitor who comes to your site might be interested in becoming a Realtor, finding a condo in Sacramento, or a variety of other things. If you optimize for 'commercial real estate for sale in san diego', there's a good chance that a visitor who finds you via this keyword will convert.

Long tailed keywords are increasingly being used by visitors. They're finding that if they type in 'real estate', they're not getting the kinds of results they want. So instead of scrolling to page 2 or 3, they scrap that search and type in something more specific. As search engines are improving, visitors can find what they want this way, so these kind of searches are increasing.

Long tailed keywords can be called long tailed derivative or semantic long tail derivative. Long tail derivative keywords have your main keyword in the phrase. For example, if your main keyword is "play piano" then a long tail derivative would be "play piano for beginners." Semantic long tail derivative don't have your main keyword in the phrase but mean the same. For example, if your main keyword is "play piano" then a semantic long tail keyword would be "make music from a piano."
Both of these keywords are essential for SEO and ranking your main keyword higher in the SERPs.

Finding long tail key term is good idea for better business. It is more convertible rather that other generic keywords and if someone can found good long-tail key phrases which can lead to better sales , this will be good really.
