New Search Engines - can they compete with Google?

ISEDN has a host of search engines linked together. One of their latest is www.searchotto.com

From there you can fine a whole host of other ISEDN members.

They claim to have over 1 billion sites in their engine.

Just curious if they indeed are able to really compete in the "search engine" world against the heavyweights?

If google sees it as a threat, they will shut it down(take it over). I don't think you will see any new search engines that can rise and compete against google. You need something unique, which is how google started

No, this is not much of a search engine. It is just running results from ExactSeek and EntireWeb, not really of much value.

I honestly don't see the point of them even trying to stay online.

Lots of search engines crop up these days and not many are able to even sustain for longer than a year or so.

Instead of trying to compete with the best, they should rather focus to have a good revenue model to carry them far....

I think new search engines need to find a niche, like mine: blogoosearch.com

Google et al focus on a very general area. If one were to focus on a niche and put effort in, I don't see why it couldn't be very successful.

I think you are exactly right, new engines should not try to compete on a macro level, but should find a niche. You do not have to be the biggest to make money...:)

My nephew sets up custom search engines for organizations in order to help them generate revenue. www.SearchEngineCorp.com

He has been doing this for three years and has had good results. I don't think he's trying to compete with Google, but I like the concept.

I don't think with the current state no one could compete with Google for many years to come.

Well you're pretty correct about your point. If you put in effor in your project(s), you will get some impressive results, but you should never keep in mind to compete with the beasts. It is like racing an M3 against a Veyron.
