Just read the slashdot story about new search engine http://www.cuil.com

Though the original story writer liked the layout.. I didn't :)

It claims to be the biggest search engine but didn't return many results for my searches.

How do we submit our sites for inclusion? I do not see an Add URL anywhere yet to be spidered but CUIL.

Or is the new search engine using data from Google.

I didn't find any place for submitting websites myself. I don't think they are using google data because number of pages indexed is different from google and search results are also completely different. :)

I did some searches related to my niche, and almost everything on the first page were parked pages or adsense sites. There were no "authority sites" to be found. So far not too Cuil.

The pictures from the site are nice, although if Cuil did become popular, I think that could be manipulated. Let's see one site about acne with a picture of a doctor, or one site about acne with a picture of a bikini girl in the search results, you do the math.

Perhaps their spiders are busily crawling the net, gathering info as we speak.

How long does it take a new search engine to spider the net and show keyword results? A day, week, month...?

Looks like they are having some trouble.. it's incredibly slow at the moment..

I get very few search results compared to google for some of my searches..

    So, not too "cuil" no..

Cuils spiders have been crawling for well over a year now. They are all over my logs.

Seems kind of buggy. For "cuil search engine" it returns one result
(searchengine.com Sligo) but says, 819 results. Where are the rest of the
    results?

For "google search engine" it finds 250 results vs. 11 million found by
    google. Pretty big discrepancy.

Also for some searches it shows no results, then goes to work only after
    a page reload.

Not bad for only 33M in VC tho :)

Looks like we've finally got a potential next-gen search engine on our hands. From what I've read, it's been under development for quite some time by a hanful of former Google employees. I certainly like the look and I like how it lays out the search results.

All of my websites are indexed in it without me having done anything.

It still does need a lot of work, though. The pictures that appear next to some listings appear to be all but completely random and some keyword searches seem to just not work, even though there are indexed sites with those words in the title.

I think the ex-googlers will have some work cut out for them. I did some searches for my site and yes it was in the index, but I do not know where they were getting the photos from as they would have a product page, but a picture of something totally different. I don't think it will go anywhere and the site was extremely slow on my side.

I just read about this on the BBC and thought to come here and post but jiten beat me to it.

Submitting your site, seems to be done via email?!?! See this page and the let us know link: http://www.cuil.com/info/webmaster_info/

The web site is mega slow, probably from all the press they are getting but surely they should have planned for that come launch time.

I tried a couple of queries and didn't like the layout much, also a lot of irrelevant results with pics that came from god knows where.

They haven`t yet included my "almost" 3 month old web site yet despite it being picked up by all of the major search engines so not sure how they can claim a bigger index.

Not a good start but they might improve, one to keep an eye on.

ok, there is some work needed, here and there...
if you search for "sex" it returns 250(!) results with safe search opt off.
And that wouldn't be so bad (compare to 850 000 000 results in google - which you won't check anyway)
if it would be 250 valuable ones...
but the first one is SEX PISTOLS.
    cheers

They might be big but I'm pretty sure the way they are processing the queries and show "REVELANT" stuff plain sucks. I just tried various spanish phrases, keywords, the results are so irrelevant it hurts, worst than searching in english.

Cheers! I'll come back after they finish reading their 30,000+ e-mails requesting to get crawled. *waits for web interface*

Since they got highlighted on slashdot today, I wonder if this has resulted into the site going beserk. I am not happy with the results so far. Even the layout doesn't look good on Safari though it was better on Firefox. The only think I like about this 'cuil' search engine is that they include a 'larger description' with search results.
