I know perfectly white hat sites that disable archive so as competitors cant backtrack what strategies/products/price point have been tried and failed.Actually, there are many reasons to block archives from a business point of view. Forget PR.Only,we SEOs are maniac about PR. :)

For fake PR, just see backlink in all tools. If no high PR backlink,it is mostly fake.

if no high PR backlink,it is mostly fake. - How You can make such a conclusion, this can be discussed as nowadays after google pr update some domains got pr4 with no backlink.and this is assessment by google
    .how about that?

Sometimes tools do not show backlink. But,in case of high PR page such as 4+,it is not likely that it wont be indexed.
Sometimes, after a domain is dropped,Google resets PR but in next update again reverts back to old or old-1/2 PR depending on how many links sticks. This might be a case you are mentioning.

^^You gotta admit most of the domains in marketplace now a days are more likely fake if no BLs.

This whole buy/sell domains based on PR itself is not a ideal business solution ( I infact buy & sell - but all based on the risk I can take)

How in this earth you think that one will sell a true PR4 website for 50$?

I purchased a PR6 for 100$ in Go Daddy auctions soon to realise that it was a fake PR. I infact had listed it here thinking/claiming it was true PR6 untill some good DP member opened my eyes.

It is infact your luck if a domain retains its PR. Particularly PR5+ it is very difficult to retain the old PR.

If it is true PR7, who will sell it for even 2000$?

It is not fooling. Everyone buying/selling knows here that PR is not obtained legitimately.

Looks like you are confused. Page Rank faking is a different ball game. You would have purchased PR 6 in Godaddy and it would have been just a small redirect. If you would have did your research well, you could have caught that. However what we are talking here is entirely different. Using sophisticated redirect method to fake PR that even tress passes page rank checkers.

Your claim of saying that all PR domains sold in DP is fake is not justifiable. There are few genuine people who are selling good domains here. Those gems are hidden under the volume of fake PR here. That's about it. I have personally sold over 200 domains here in last few months - Most of them withstand Page rank update except few. You gotta do your research before making the purchase, that's what I am trying to say.

If people are still stupid enough to be chasing PR they deserve what they get. It's not rocket science, they should know better than to buy a link on a "directory" that has a foolbar PR display of 9.

Wow, this some good information. It shows that people don`t know how to do some homework on building seo the right way so that leads to forum services.

My partial solution is to promote a new PR standard:
Natural PR = The domain derives its PageRank from natural strong backlinks profile and not from manipulations.
I even created a nice mark for that:

I invite everyone who deal with such domains to embrace this new standard.

I almost (right now) got caught with 5 PR3. I used wayback machine which showed the redirects beautifully, even after checking elsewhere and getting the all clear.

    No rocket science needed.

Who will sell a true PR3 domain for 30-40$?

Even if it passes all tests, no one will sell a true PR for even few 100$ s.

Imagine you have a website where you got PR3 by merit (Imagine the work you would have done)

How can you sell it for 30$?

So, almost all sellers and buyers know that it is not true PR which they are buying.

Even buyers have some plans with these PR domains (like link sales etc.). :) They are hopeful that they can make some sales and recover money.

This biz model is working now but will not work for long.

Great post! What tool did you use to find the former redirected websites for the other domains without the Google cache snippet?

I honestly didn't know how actually a PR was faked. I keep reading posts on DP about fake PR but well I can say I know the reason now.. Thanks

Several people have mentioned timeframes and PRs as an indicator of fraud, (grabbing numbers out of thin air) such as a 2 month old site being PR4 as impossible. What are reasonable time frames to see pages achieve PRs? Clearly it depends on the amount of effort promoting, but is it possible to state that with heavy work a site could make PR1 in 90 days? 2 in six months?
