I totally agree. As a freelancer the majority of my clients are wanting CMS's built into their websites now. Most of it is custom stuff they want too.
One of the latest trends in php is background processing ie daemons running in the background carring out certain tasks taking the load off the front-end allowing for a quick response while those tasks that take longer to carry out are done, showing progress to the front end.. a good example of this is torrentflux. Also, Form generation, data-persistent objects (stored in an sql database) and scraping/submitting data via php scripts.
