Why would the affiliate not go direct to the merchant. Networks pay upto £75 per IVA lead, and we pay upto £100 with a bonus fee if they convert of £150. Conversion is about 30-50% of all accepted leads.
Over all my years of affiliate marketing I can say that there are many advantages of going with an affiliate network rather than straight to a merchant. Although you get more going straight to a merchant, not all merchants are trustworthy. Don't get me wrong as there are alot of good affiliate programs on the web that do not use networks, but there is always a few and going with a network normally cuts most of that out so you will not have to worry so much if you join the program and are not sure if they will pay or not. If you are doing ppc, then you may get a few sales for a merchant and then have to move on before reaching the minimum payout level as you were loosing money instead of making it with that merchant, whereas in a network you can still get the earnings from that merchant if you just move onto another merchant as all your earnings are consolidated into one payment. If you are using datafeeds, then instead of adjusting your scripts for each merchants affiliate program datafeed structure, you can just go to a network where all of the merchants listed will have used the networks datafeed structure, giving you access to quite a few different merchants datafeeds where you only have to organize your scripts once for all the merchants in that network. I would really say that affiliate networks are good, but if you want to cut out the middleman and you know you can get sales, then going directly to the merchant is the best option. If you are new and not sure whether you will do well in affiliate marketing or not or are trying ppc for the first time then a network will be a good option. If you start making good money then you could always go directly to the merchant in the end. Just my thoughts anyway.
