New or old content?

I have a site with like 200 or so pages. The site has been online for years and some pages have failed to get indexed, PRed or get good traffic. I am under the impression that it is because the pages may seem to be a bit unrelated to each other. So I was thinking of taking the different sections of the site and breaking it down into smaller mini sites with about 15 or so pages all related to the same topic.

If I do this, I will take down this main site and use the content on a new domain. Will this count as duplicate content or if I wait until the main site gets deindexed it gets classified as new content?

If your domain has your keyword(s) in it, I would work on it to get it going. Main reason being the age of the domain. You can go ahead and delete the content on your main site and use that content elsewhere and no, you don't have to worry about duplicate content.

I would recommend you keep current content and do add new content instead of changed whole site. This could make negative effect toward your site in a short term anyway. Google would founds a huge changes for contents on a whole site and then degrade your site since they lost trust and unsure what is going on there.

If you choose to do your own way. Your site is still fine and would be recovered after Google noticed the change and re-evaluate completed anyway. However, it would takes much time before all things settled again and cannot be predicted accurately. It would take nore less than one month I supposed.

In my own experiences, it is unnecessary to do so. A mainly targeted theme or niche would be OK for a site. Classifying them via sub categories and building deep backlinks to them using variants of your main targeted keywords would be more effective. :)

    Thanks,

Instead of changing the content or the pages, start adding new pages with some more unique content. I am sure they will get indexed soon and then you can connet them to the old pages which are not indexed.

Old content is fine and some times best. Content does not need to be fresh unless you
are a news site. Some of the best and oldest sites online have the same content as
    decades ago.

I suggest that you just create sub sections and 302 pages to the appropriate section.

Then work on getting more links.

I suggest you make a 301 to the new pages.

Definitely keep your site's age, it's plus factor now. If you could manage to categorize your contents plus a fresh new website design that would enable bots to crawl your site more freely, then adding new contents, your site surely has potentials..
