...because people link with anyone without taking note of the quality of link.

    * Is your link partner relevant to your industry and niche?
    * Does you link partner have a credible set of links already?
    * Is your link in a place where it adds value?
    * How well does your link partner perform in the search engines already?

    --

Link exchanges happen everyday, but not as a system whereby people are involved in email requests - interviews, guest blogging, article exchanges. They add value, and that's what Google and it's readers want right?

First thing first, you're talking to a Web developer here (who knows far more about SEO and link development than most of the people on this forum). I know what a CSS gallery is; I know what their intended purpose is, and just like the owners of such sites, I cannot sit by and watch them get spammed "for SEO purposes".

That reads more like a sales pitch than an article. And I don't like sales pitches.

A few years back? Try nearly a decade ago. It's what gave Google its huge competitive advantage, and the other major international search engines have yet to completely catch up. (Though with Yahoo, Microsoft and Ask.com having garbage for search engines, that's entirely understandable. And that was BEFORE Ichan and his puppet surrendered search to their new Redmond masters.)

Only the good ones are. If what you said was true, then even the seediest and shadiest sites' links in the worst of the "bad neighborhoods" would be considered to be "seals of approval" (to use your own words) by the search engines.

Not just authorities, but legitimate sites as well.

That's not a link exchange in the sense I'm speaking of. What you just described happens ALL THE TIME and is perfectly natural. (It's just two Web sites giving out merit-based links to each other.) What I'm referring to when I talk about link exchanges are people who specifically ask other sites to trade links for the purpose of ranking better in the search engines.

Actually, they would benefit (well, the sites in your example anyway).

Not just links pages, but site-wide links as well. I've seen it a lot and tell my clients to remove them as soon as possible (I actually make it a condition of my working with them). And that's the type of link exchange I hate -- the RECIPROCAL link exchange (where links are only given when they're traded; site A must link to site B in order for site B to link to site A).

Also don't make them the cornerstone of your link building strategy. Yeah, they're nice to have, but don't think it's the end of the world if a site doesn't link back to yours. And even if they don't link back to yours, you've just made a contact which may turn into a merit-based link back to your site later on down the road.

Now, let's go back to your earlier example, where one site linked to another and sent them an email letting them know (but without asking for a link in return). What you did was give them a "merit-based" link -- when they link back to you they're giving you a merit-based link as well. It's really no different than two people complimenting each other on a job well done as far as I'm concerned.

And like I said, those links aren't "reciprocal" links -- they're just two sites "communicating" via linking. And once again, don't make it a cornerstone of your link building strategy. Just consider it another tool in the toolbox to be used appropriately.

Video is one of the most under utilized linking strategies. People will buy hundreds of dollars in links but a well targeted video will get you tons of backlinks from sites you would never get a link on and do it completely naturally.

I think you should this condition again,

Links must be permanent. No FFA's,Blogs,Classifieds, dynamic links, etc.

The blog comments are not the permanent way of getting back links. It may be happen that a blog which today is do follow ,on next they it won't.

It sounds good that we can make back links by posting comments on do follow blogs. But, practically its really tough work.
Because you can't say surely that out of 1000 do follow blogs your comment will get approved on 600 or 500 or else. This is beacuse -

    - Do follow blogs also get a huge amount of spams. The blog owners don't go through every comments.Consequently, comments by spammers including some useful comments are deleted by owner while moderation .

    - You can't rest assured about that on the next day a blog comments will remain do follow.May be on next day or week ,the blog owner will get frustrated with spams and add no follow tag to the comments .
As a result whatever links you had built by commenting on that blog will ruin.
