New link building idea - good idea or not?

It may not be a new idea, but it is something I have been stirring up in my mind lately. My idea is this - to write good articles and content for other websites, which have a link back to my site. Yes I know there are article submission sites, so hear me out.

Firstly, my website is very new and it does not have a lot of backlinks yet (less than 200). My thought is to work on the quality of backlinks, and not quantity. My website in my signature is quite a large field (16.5 million sites for "classic cars" in google, so this will take some time and work).

I have submitted a few well written articles to article submission sites, and a few have been published on other websites. The problem is the sites are usually crappy MFA sites. Speaking of "crappy", one site ran my article through some kind of program to change the text so it was "fresh content". Not only was it unreadable, but every term of classic car was turned to "crappy car". That's not what I want linking to my site.

So my idea is to first find highly ranked websites in my area, preferably with good PR, and to contact them to see if they are interested in letting me write a good article for their website or blog, and the only requirement would be a link back to my site.

Examples: I currently have a good article on my site for 10 steps to buying a classic car, but I could easily expand on each of those 10 steps in their own article, and publish it on other sites. I could find a mechanics website or blog, and write an article on how to find a reliable auto mechanic for your classic car. There are things to look for that can be different from a regular mechanic. Or, another step is how to find a car online. I could expand that on just using ebay, craigslist, etc to sell and buy your car. And it's not just classic car sites - I could write articles for car insurance sites, auto mechanic tools, and even find ways to link SUV's and hybrid cars to a muscle car article (I have some very interesting and possibly controversial ideas with that - which of course brings traffic!).

This would of course take a lot of effort, so I want to know if it would be worth it, and from peoples experiences, if other websites would be willing to do this? I can easily sit here for the next year and write articles, submit them to article directorys, find 10,000 other directories, link pages, forum sigs, guestbook signings, etc to submit to, but somehow I feel my time would be better spent with quality articles on QUALITY WEBSITES I contact.

    Thoughts?

You should make each one unique also. If you find some good sites related to topic and they use article it will help

Yes, I would only publish one version of each article, so they are unique. I may write multiple articles on the same subject for different websites, but each would be unique.

    Isn't it called a guestblog?
However I doubt it very much you will find enough quality sites to make your way in the SERPs :(
    Or maybe I'm missing something?

I think it's a great idea. It's sort of a win win situation. I know if someone offered me an article of good quality and it only contained like one link in it I'd probably put it up on one of my sites. The only thing I would do different is don't go for exactly the same site as yours try and ask for links on sites that arent' in direct competition with you cause I wouldn't put my competitors links on my site.

I don't know how this will effect your positioning, but I once got a ton of business from one well written article on one popular website. If you get the right article on the right site at the right time, it can really pay off.
