So I just started at a new company. The two most important things for me are getting the website redesigned and doing some major SEO work there, and marketing to the customers via email.

From what I can tell we have emails in our database that are as new as today and as old as 6 years ago. Total about 17000 of them. I contacted a couple email marketing companies and they gave me a lot of problems over the age of the emails. They also wouldnt really help me with any suggestions on what to do about it.

So I need to know what to do going forward? Everyone there was asked for their email, and gave it over the phone willingly and answered yes to being contacted that way. But the company has never actually done it, never used the email addresses for anything in fact.

What do I need to do with this list before I can really use it? Anyone with any good experience in this field want to give me some suggestions? Or be blunt with me, am I going about this all wrong?
