Hello all. I'm a computer veteran, but I'm just starting to look into web hosting and development. I currently intern at a web developing company, but we work with Sharepoint and all I've really done is built sites under that. Looking at buying my own domains and hosts, I'm a bit overwhelmed! However, it seems that you can get started relatively cheap, so I'm very interested in it. I just bought a server from HostGator to host a normal website, so I'm going to use that as a type of playground where I can experiment with things like content management systems and other things other than just hosting plain html files.

However, I'm also interested in getting a proxy. I used to run an SSH server on my Linksys router running DD-WRT, and I would log into it via my laptop using a secure encryption key and tunnel all my internet traffic through it so that it was all encrypted and I didn't have to worry about other firewalls blocking my web requests. However, that taxed my limited home internet connection pretty well and made it tough for anyone to do online gaming at home when I'm browsing the web in this fashion. I see that you can buy servers to host proxies, but the proxies they host all seem to be the ones based on webpages that end up doing things like disabling java and making sites like youtube unusable, as well as causing other problems with sessions on other sites. Do any of these hosts offer an SSH connection that can be used in the same way that I used to use mine at home? It would only be for my personal use, not advertised in any way. Or is this way too far from the norm?

I'd appreciate any insight yall can give on the subject. This seems to be a well developed and knowledgeable community, I look forward to interacting with yall more in the future!
