Holiday Soup Link Directory is open for business. My hope is that I have come up with a system that will provide backlinks and even some traffic.

This one is a little different, but don't run away when you see the categories. The directory is organized by holidays and events, but I have included a key that allows you to follow a more normal set of categories. Simply click the catmap link in the top bar to see what I mean. You can click through to the holiday or event the "normal" category is mapped to and from there you are in familiar territory. Click "submit Link", fill the form, click continue and you are done, just like a normal directory, except your SEO site may be under "Googles Birthday", Minstrel's site may appear under "World Mental Health Day", ViciousSummers sites would be under "National Underwear Day" and so on. I hope if nothing else, you have fun with the sites and categories.

    OR...
If you are curious "why the odd categories" you may want to poke around a little. And if you care to get a bit more involved you can kick your soup up a notch!

I'm working on a Holiday and Event Content Site, Holiday Soup. For certain relevant categories of content, the top 10 links from from the link directory (sorted by hits now, PR has been a problem) are shown on the right. In other words, an article in the category of "Donald Trump's Birthday" may have your real estate site link show to the right.

Upcoming events are featured in a right block and link to a calendar.

Also links are tossed together when cron runs every 20 minutes with newer links thrown into the "LinkSoup". Links appear there with descriptions and are grouped by category, but organized differently than in the link directory. I realize individual links may be devalued by this repetition, but i think there is still decent SEO benefit, and the chances may be increased that your link will be on a higher ranked page.

    But wait there's more!!!:)

Categories in the directory can be suggested, holidays and events can be added at HolidaySoup and you can also submit an article with a live link in the author box.

How this complex stew will taste to the search engines remains to be seen. I dropped a few SEO considerations in favor of features I just wanted to have. I've had fun with it so far (you will notice glimpses of humor scattered throughout) and I hope you have fun with it to.

Thanks. I think I may have created a time monster! :0

I'm trying to think of a good holiday to relate to web-hosting. Or maybe a Birthday of someone important in that field?

Thanks! I just wrote a quick holiday description for Tuba Day. You may get a kick out of seeing your link there next to it. And in May it will show as an upcoming event on the front page.

Just by chance, I've known a few tubists. I play many instruments and there was one summer about 20 years ago I worked at a water park dressed as a chicken playing the drums. 4 of the guys in the band marched for Ohio State and the sousaphone player (an actual tuba major) was pretty remarkable on the instrument. (yes he dotted the I once) He played "The Bell's of Saint Marys" for his audition. I was completely amazed. I'm a really bad trumpet player, and I've tried french horn and baritone...so I know you can jam those lips together and make some sort of high sound. But to play so melodically with speed and control and jumping multiple octaves...unbelievable!

Maybe you can suggest an interesting or well known biologist and I can add his/her birthday for the category...a trick I've resorted to for many categories.

how about Charles Darwin (his views are not shared by everyone :)
The Beagle set sail on 27 December 1831, he was born on 12 February 1809

Or better still one of the evolutionary heroes Thomas Henry Huxley (wrote Evidence as to Man's Place in Nature), and was grandfather of Aldous 'brave new world' Huxley born May 4, 1825

Thanks, I'll go with Darwin. He was certainly influential. I never completely read origin of the species. I enjoyed The Dragons of Eden: Speculations on the Evolution of Human Intelligence by Carl Sagan...but I pretty much lost respect for him as an objective scientist when he starting forecasting the nuclear winter scenario after Mt St Helens. So sad when a hero falls victim to junk science!

Site is added. I think the American vs British meaning of the word holiday may add some extra SEO challenges!
