I am Muslim, but I always speak against what is wrong. So this is something against Muslims... I'm not a Muslim but I wanted to say that I really respect this as your choice for a first thread. The milk thing is crazy - I hope the other Muslims here will agree with you
Nightcrawlers, I think I was right about you. I suspect its a scary thing for the Muslims in Saudi Arabia to speak out directly against such idiocy. It is only outrage from other Muslims around the world that is ever going to put an end to this kind of nonsense. Good post.
Hey nightcrawlers - On the one hand I'm a huge fan of breastmilk. Not so much a matter of thinking it tastes better than the kind from cattle... I just think it's cool that it comes in such attractive containers. Even so, gotta agree that seems like an odd thing to tell women to do. Ya gotta wonder where that one came from. Reminds me of the conversations that people had in college when there was a lotta alcohol or recreational smoking products involved and some guy would suddenly giggle and say "Hey, ya know what'd be neat?! They oughta pass a law that says..." Then he'd lay out a plan much like the fatwa up there, giggle some more, then start talking about some entirely unrelated topic he thought terribly profound. On topic - It's interesting to see that the fatwa discussed above isn't just automatically and unquestioningly embraced. Inspection and dialog are a good thing. Having grown up in a southern Baptist environment I concur with the importance of not just taking everything a religious leader says at face value. Some of the guys that were widely followed in the religious circles in my early days were IMO just nuttier than a bag of pecans. As soon as I got old enough to reason... the "Heeeey, wait just a darn minute" gene kicked in. I can assure you, standing up in the middle of a Baptist church and asking pointed questions instead of shaking your head affirmatively and saying "It must be so because he said it" is not popular. That said, it oughta be done on a daily basis. I was raised Christian, and though I have nothing against God, some of his followers are there for all the wrong reasons. I'm pretty sure a lot of the people that say they're speaking on his behalf are making it up as they go along. Trusting ANY man unquestionably... whether they be a religious leader, politician, etc... without asking pertinent questions, just a bad idea. We all have a brain for a reason, and we just aren't meant to be sheep. Sticking together and unquestioningly following the leader is how lemmings end up going over a cliff. Oh well, good luck with your discussion. Hope it doesnt get trashed like most. Actually the most intelligent opening post I've seen in this forum for some time. ~ Rob
Hmmmmm that sounds a little idiotic and scary the government should take a rough action against him !!
Nightcrawlers, Ask yourself, did sheikh abdel mohsen made this up? Or was it included in the Islamic readings? If you think its wrong, then you should re-consider Mohammed as your prophet. Read this Hadith: "Abu Huthayfa and his wife Sahla, had an adopted son (a freed slave) called Salim, who used to work and live in the house freely. As Salim was like a son to her, Sahla used to rely on him to help in the housework. She could stay with him in the same room without having to cover herself from his looks. When Mohammed cancelled the principle of adoption, Salim became a stranger in the house and could no longer be alone with Sahla, Abu Huthayfa’s wife. The Lady complained to Mohammed who immediately provided her with a genius solution- he asked her to breast-feed Salim, after which she would again be allowed to keep him as a son with her in the house. She said: ‘but Salim is a man and has a beard!’ Mohammed smiled to her and said ‘I know that’.
The genius behind this idea is that in some interpretations of Islam women can only be around their male relatives and no other males. This poses a problem for women who are seen with "their male colleagues or men they come into regular contact with". The solution they came up with is so idiotic. Since Allah does not want unrelated men and women to be together - but the Saudis think Allah is a moron and they can fool him by having any number of men take breast milk from some women and thus they become her "family" since they partook in some of her breast milk. The original rule is absurd, but the idea that they can trick Allah to me is humorous. Just like the notion that interest is not charged on loaned money in Islam. Just word games to make some feel like they are still following the words of a man 1400 years later. The Saudi version of Islam has become a mockery of itself when even the "believers" have to come up with tricks because their own interpretation of Islam is so unworkable.
They really need a separation of Church and State. The west made great progress after this principle was adopted.
@nightcrawlers Fatwa is a religious edict which must not contradict with Quran and Hadith. A Fatwa issuing scholar can not forcibly enforce his or her fatwa. In this case Fatwa is just the personal opinion of this cleric. A baby should be breast fed for two years after birth because it is greatly beneficial for newborn infants.that's what Quran says. Breast milk is for the babies and is considered haram for the adults. I personally find it very disgusting. This guy is already getting enough criticism in his own country. Lot of wacky news coming from around the world these days so get used to it.
What is your view on this then? "Abu Huthayfa and his wife Sahla, had an adopted son (a freed slave) called Salim, who used to work and live in the house freely. As Salim was like a son to her, Sahla used to rely on him to help in the housework. She could stay with him in the same room without having to cover herself from his looks. Why don't you give us the short version. Seems pretty clear Mohammad instructed Aisha to breast feed a grown man.
It's not just the Saudi's. Ezzat Attiya, the president of the hadith department at Egypt’s al-Azhar University issued the same fatwa in 2007. Muhammad set this rule, and therefore by the rules of Islam no Muslim can argue with it.
lol @ Truth777 , the guy is just pointing out at the Fatwa not at the religion .. Many get criticized by other Muslims sheikhs as well so if anybody made a mistake that's his fault not Islam's . let's give an example to illustrate : Gamal el banah said that drinking wine is ok if you don't get drunk , Hadiths said the opposite and the Fatwa received failure . I hope you differentiate between Islam and Muslims . Sorry for my English , CYB3RKING Turkish Hacker .
@Will.Spencer Prophet Muhammed never set this rule , please stop posting fake information . Such Fatawas are made by personal work and thinking based on religious facts or historical acts this is why they are called FATAWAS , else they are Islamic facts . Fatawas are subjected to criticism , Hadiths are subjected to study of who narrated it and how honest the narrator is or the narrators are . So please that kind of posting fake information based on ignorance and hatred isn't appreciated .
Again, I will post the same thing to you who claims Mohammed never set this before: "Abu Huthayfa and his wife Sahla, had an adopted son (a freed slave) called Salim, who used to work and live in the house freely. As Salim was like a son to her, Sahla used to rely on him to help in the housework. She could stay with him in the same room without having to cover herself from his looks. She said: ‘but Salim is a man and has a beard!’ Mohammed smiled to her and said ‘I know that’.
@luke12 I guess I'd already noted that Hadiths are also studied , who narrated it and to whom he narrated it ... Azhar denied the fact that Islam set that rule which proves that either the Hadith is very weak or has another explanation . And feeding him from her milk doesn't mean that he gets the milk directly from her breast (mouth in breast ) . Please prove to me that th Hadith is true and Valid .
