“The net's regulators will vote on Thursday to decide if the strict rules on so-called top level domain names, such as .com or .uk, can be relaxed. If approved, it could allow companies to turn their brands into domain names while individuals could also carve out their own corner of the net.”

I don't understand at all. That was the worst written article I have ever seen.

What the heck does this mean?

I think that is it, I saw another article (way better written) that explained it.

They said it would cost $50,000 to register ...

This is the dumbest idea since square wheels.. I would rather they not pass this new reg... if they do I'm not buying into it. It'll only make .com's more valuable. Then again, maybe I'll like it! hmm... how many extensions is enough?

"The move could also see the launch of .xxx, after years of wrangling".. this would be something interesting to watch the further development for long awaited .xxx.

If you want a more personal domain the it may be a great idea. I understand that people selling 'pre registered' domains may get a bit concerned over this, but from an independent view it may allow more people to register useful domains.

The domain name market may go crazy.

I dont think that is anything to worry about in the near future, though at some point domainers may need to adjust their game a bit. To be honest it seems more like a novelty to me for the end user at this point. For big companies sure it makes great sense to go that route. A key determining factor will also be how these new tld get treated by the serp gods. Just my 2 cents...

It's not that big of a deal. It will cost anywhere from 50k - 250k to purchase one so only the hot shots will get it. Plus people are so accustom to typing in .com that it really wont affect anyone. The value of your domain name isn't going to drop either because of this. Now a days domain names don't even really have a value all the good domains were snatched up a long time ago.

so if you buy a .abc are you the only one who is allowed to see .abc domains? Won't people just race for major brands?

Yeah if abc bought .abc they would be the only ones that could use it. Only the big shots will get it though and do something like this

    my.paypal
    roadrunner.timewarner
    windows.vista

Those are just a few examples.
