New domain or sub-folder in current domain?

I'm sure this has been talked about before, but I was looking for your views on purchasing new domains.

Everytime I come up with a new idea for a site I build it and stick it on a new domain. If the site idea is big enough, it definitely needs a domain of it's own. However, I sometimes have these smaller ideas where name branding is not important, the site is only a few pages (like a few stories I write, or a photo blog, etc...)

For the past few weeks I have been working on a beta version of a new site, it was a decent sized idea (which means I planned on building an entire domain around it), but some how that damned Google bot found my beta folder in one of my older sites with a good PR (out of the sandbox for a long time).

Here is the kicker: I am already ranking high for the keywords I was wanting to rank high for. Obviously it's kind of a problem... kind of.

Now I already have this site in a sub-folder of a totally different site and I have this new domain just sitting there. Should I bother putting up the new domain and transferring everything to it, or should I just say forget about it and leave it in the sub-folder?

If I keep it where it is I have the benefit already being out of the sandbox... but I lose any chance at branding that domain. Plus I would have to compete with myself... not to mention duplicate content...

Long term domain, short term sub-folder. Do you want fast money or stable income?
