I know i am probably just going to get the same responses regarding SEO, link building etc etc (so please if this is all you have to add, don't add it); But does anyone who runs a successful directory have any tips as to anything different they may have done to promote their directory when it was new?
Well there are a couple of members that run such things . But you'd have to wait and see if anyone bothers to respond . I guess one way to promote is by forcing the directory users to give you something in exchange : banner spot , link or even a nice review .
It must be the same directory in your sig that you are referring to. Become an authority on Australian Imports and write about it. The more your site becomes the authority the more it will be the place to go for that niche to add their site.
If you are looking for direct marketing them you need to get email marketing services. Its very useful to get direct visitor.

To provide a great place for people to come for info and advise? A link farm for webmasters? This sort of shite needs removing, it's of no use to anyone, and the ip should be banned. You need to encourage quality. You need to provide quality. No amount of promotion is going to make this directory a success when you have content like the one above. You are a link farm...... Secondly I would drop all the adsense, it looks like you are motivated by the financial gain and not a service to others. I'm going to guess it make little to no daily revenue at the moment anyway. You want people to come back to the site and to be honest right now there's nothing that's going to encourage that. I like to overall look of the directory and there's lots of space on the homepage, which would be ideal for blog comments. If you don't have a blog about importers ect I suggest you start one. My advise: drop the free regular listing / Make it paid remove all the spam IMMEDIATELY add blog comments to the homepage. ps. You have a spelling mistake in the first sentence of your main content. First of all you need to make your directory desirable to put a listing in, Why would someone want to put a listing in it? Webmasters want link juice- your site has none, you need to build your backlinks Webmasters want their links in quality sites that get traffic - you have a niche you can build on maybe you can put some good info on Australian imports get some pages that will rank and get traffic I would never pay to have a link in a site with adsense it looks ghetto and gives the impression that you don't care about your readers and you just want them to give you a few cents and go away. It is like having a gang of panhandlers in the hallway. Build up some PR, backlinks, get rid of the spam and adsense, put in some decent content. Make your site quality and people will want a listing in it.
