New directory idea

My latest site www.reallyusefulstuff.com is intended to be a directory (no reciprocal links required) of, urm, really useful stuff, i.e. online tutorials and "how to..." pages on all subjects. I really only started on it yesterday, so haven't really developed a well formed "branding", but would welcome your thoughts, reflections and ideas.

 

That looks really good Trance, nice use of color. A nice header/logo would complete the look.

Looks great Trance, but I can't keep looking at it, I have to leave for work in a half hour and I am afraid that the site could put me in a Trance and cause me to lose my job.

Are there any hidden objects in the pages? If you spin it backward or mirror the page does it show you the Stairway to heaven?

You must keep an weary eye on Trance, you know his background and how sticky his pages must be

I like him a hell of a lot, but he is into mind control like Kalina and Minstrel, so all members beware

We still love you Trance even if you control our minds once in a while.

Good looking site, directories are interesting projects but they take a lot of time for the public to accept them since there are so many of them and a search engine seems to always be the first choice for most that search.

If you are committed to a long term view I think they can be successful.

My boyfriend is on night shift so I tend to stay up with him at night, lol. It's 7:40am.

I also love the nights better then the days... now don't get Anthony started on me. Lucky me he has to leave for work, Ha!

 

Kalina sleeps for half an hour and stays up six on a regular basis, she is a high energy girl Trance.

She must be the most valuable forum member ever, know that she is online most of her life and she is a hell of an asset to the forum.

Great, you've added a header now. It looks really nice Trance, great work!

 

Very nice site and use of colors. Amost makes me want to fix a Tropical drink and listen to the waves roll in. The only thing I am sad about is you dont have anything on there for real estate.

There are some good sources for preparing a home to sell and other useful bits of information that I believe your visitors would enjoy. Another example would also be like Feug Shui and real estate, if that is spelled right lol. Again though very nice looking directory.

 

But will anybody see the useful stuff unless you make it search engine friendly?

This is very much a work in progress (as I guess directories are by definition)... I will be upgrading to the full version of WSN soon, which comes with the relevant mod_rewrite (I've never managed to get my head around making mod_rewrite work myself).

That said, my experience is that google at least is perfectly capable of indexing pages with complex query strings

The other thing I guess is that it's unlikely that most people will find a directory such as this through the search engines... obviously I aim to optimise for terms like online tutorial, I'd be a fool not too, but I hope, in time and with a bit more experience, to make this useful enough that people tell people about it.

 

Exactly. AC is the biggest hijacker of threads on the forum and is only encouraged by Kalina and myself
