I will concur with smindsrt on this one. While some have the budget to add filler sites from DMOZ and some directory scripts come with a DMOZ filler many free directories start out with no sites at all.

While having no sites in your category can cause your category pages to be picked up but the Search Engines duplication filters I would say that no sites would be perfered to coping a datebase from another directory in whole and there by risking both directories.

I personally hold that adding up your site, or having your site added up, to all free directories that don't require a reciprocal link is a good thing. Some directories will fail, most will not.

With the Alpha Directory this is not going to be an issue as there are only 14 categories.

bluemouse2: Nice clean directory. You are going to want to add up more categories but you have a good domain name and a good start. Don't be discouraged by negitive responce : )

I gave you a link on my free web directory page.

Work on getting on a few of the other lists here so you can get into the SE indexes.

The best directory links are hand edited and accepted ones where there are a few resources on a few pages. I personally never follow blindly, I need to like something to submit to it. Like it for different possible reasons. I would not be surprised if down the road sites will get penalized for having 90% of incoming links come from worthless self-submit places. They will label that as black hat and discard your site. Not that incoming links should hurt but the tactic of getting links will have everything search engines hate about seos written all over it. Some of the small directories are actually pretty good, but with everyone going overboard, it will be hard to create and maintain value unless your site is really about something.

I wasn't talking about it being empty submission-wise. OBVIOUSLY all directories will be empty at day 1 (or have copied stuff).

I was refering to content besides the link which is non-existent. When I looked I could count on 1 hand the words on each page if I discarded anchor text. IMO that's asking for trouble and of no value to anyone.

It might be better now, I haven't checked back.

bluemouse2: all the best with your directory, you have to start some where. May be to start with you can change the css of your directory to give a different look than the default one.

    Thanks... and keep going ;)

bluemouse, some SE bots might find it hard to index your dynamic pages . Consider changing them to static ones . Good luck with your directory .

hedir: The search engines are not going to cough on pages like http://www.alphadir.com/index.php?c=14 . Its only when you put 2 or 3 or 4 vars on in the URL that they don't like it. One var in the URL is not going to cause problems with G/Y/M.

I have suggested to the owner of that directories that they get the mod rewrite code for the directory and change index.php?c=14 into 14.html or some thing close to it.
