I don't need a designer, but here's some advice: try to use less glow, and combine colors better :).

hmm, definitly way to much glow, you should try using softer colours. This is a tutorial I made http://monstertuts.com/elegant-website-layout/ and I've found that a lot of people really like these types of designs. Hope It helps.

I would not say there is way too much glow atall, for the purpose in which they have been designed for i think they are very good!!

I like the colours in which you have used

Try using different fonts and try working abit more on the banners/logo's.....

Aloon light backgrounds try using a dark font as the white font on the yellow background doesnt really work

But overall i like them :)

The pictures really bother me and with the placeholder text, I just keep thinking they are placeholder images. What type of client are you looking for? All your designs look like they are advertising some sort of vacation or health spa or something. How are you designing these?

    To be frank...

Designer websites do not equal myspace. This is about your work, not your face. You're not going to get any more work being pretty for you webcam.

I would focus more on what you can do for you clients. Also, as a friendly tip from someone who wishes he was young and living at home, happily designing away... design for people you haven't worked for. Think as big as you can. Emulation is perfectly fine for building your portfolio.

Think about putting design comps in your portfolio for Apple, Adobe, LG, Samsung, Disney, Harley Davidson, any major bank that's doing well and has been in the news, etc. etc. Be creative.

This will help you leverage bigger contracts later in your career. You don't have to lie and put it on your resume, it's just to prove that you're capable of high-end design.

Of course, you should probably study what high-end design looks like too. Start with color theory. =D

I should clarify my earlier post...

If the designs do not match the brand's image, it probably won't be worth your time and effort.

Heres a couple of logo designs i have done for examples of different types of brands/services and how my designs vary.....

I know they are not websites designs, just examples of how i make every design i do different depending on what it is advertising/representing....

Another thing of note that's slightly offtopic; as a matter of namespace. If your name really is Sarah McLaughlan, even though the celebrity's name is spelled differently, you will be forever fighting the namespace in the search engines, as it is a common typo of her name...

That said, you could probably operate under an entity name instead, or a nom de plume.

Yes, this is a very important step in becoming a killer designer! I went the code route in the long run because I didn't have what it took to be on par or stay competitive in design.

It's hard out there... especially now.
