@Earlpearl: You know how I hate agreeing with you, but....I have to agree with pretty much your entire post, including the idea of Obama being loyal to his wife. He is way to in love with himself/his position to screw it up with something as petty and common as sex. @Chaos: As much as the idea of Nuclear Fusion bringing the price of oil to zero, and as fascinating as your information on the topic is, I'm hard pressed to imagine all the cars, ships, airplanes, and tanks which currently burn Oil being converted to Nuclear Fusion this decade, even if the technology was made safe, efficient, and cost effective in the first part of the decade. The logistics of manufacturing, shipping and packaging Nuclear fusion power plants in all sizes would itself take a decade. The logistics of converting all existing oil burning devices, either to fusion reactor, or battery powered via Fusion Reactor would likely take at least another 8 years in the first world, never mind the third world. Another thing you can count on is that OPEC will cut production to a snails pace once the technology looks like it is going to be viable. Got to get as much $$$ as possible for that last hurrah.
hehe No need to manufactur millions of nuclear fusion plants! they will not come in "all sizes" - fussion plants will be huge monsters which will exist in very few locations, at least in the first decades. Instead, once nuclear fusion will be made possible, cars, ships, airplanes, and tanks will be converted from using fossile fuels to electric power. Electricity comes from the fussion reactors, and is cheap: all it needs is just hydrogen (16% of our atmosphere) and it unlike fission energy (present day nuclear reactors) it is also clean - no nuclear waste. The technology to use electric energy in transportation vehicles exists and is in use today. With airplanes that might take longer, but there will be huge interest from both airlines and consumers to reach that goal, so they will reach it. Probably, Israel will be the first country in the world who will forget about fuel cars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shai_Agassi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Better_Place http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXfqGL3C2uI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5b0T5NUHyxs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SkSyM0IcXA
No a child is exactly one year old the hour, minute, second he was born on January first, one second after that the child is in his second year. When did the new millennium begin? When did the 21st Century begin? If you ask these questions of 100 people, it's likely at least 90 of them will answer, "On January 1, 2000." That sounds reasonable, but it's wrong. The new millennium, as defined by the Gregorian Calendar used in most of the world, actually began on January 1, 2001, not January 1, 2000. All of the "millennium" celebrations at the end of 1999 were one year too early! (Not that I object in any way to a good party!) Predictably, the same mistake is being made with regard to the end of the current decade. Why the Confusion? Apparently, it's because it "sounds right" that a millennium (or a century) should begin with a nice, round number like 2000. This is sometimes called the "odometer effect" because many automobile owners perceive the rollover of their mileage indicators to include a long string of zeroes as a milestone of sorts. http://www.astronomyboy.com/millennium/ http://www.google.ca/search?sourcei...CA332CA332&q=when+did+the+new+millenium+start Read the first link, if you don't get it after that there really is no point in discussing it any further, it like arguing that 1+1 does not equal 2.
I somewhat assumed this after reading the site describing the Fusion power under development. If it comes down to battery powered vehicles, I would make the same assertion. We might get 60% of the cars on the road today converted to battery power via L-Ion batteries in the next decade, come Fusion or no. That said, unless you have some knowledge on battery technology that I am unaware of, weight and size vs charge capacity will continue to be a prohibitive factor for converting boats, ships, 18 wheelers, and trains to batteries for the next decade. If we had the battery technology, we could do what you are describing very cheaply and mostly eco-friendly with the Nuclear power technology of today.

Maybe some DP math might help you understand, now a year (apart from leap year) has 365 days, that's a fact. goto: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/forumdisplay.php?f=19&page=260 Find a thread that is 365 days old and see what date it was posted, as if by magic it'll be the same date as the date you look, just 1 year older. You can try it today, tomorrow or next year and it will always work untill we come upon another leap year.
i heard a lot of great predictions in this youtube video. looks like some cool shit is headed our way.
Roman, man you caught me - for a minute I thought I was going to get away with it , but you actually wrote it out!!!
as for cars --> look at the links at the end of my previous post. This is not only feasible, but it will become reality here in Israel in the next decade for sure. trains ---> are already all electric (at least in Europe, dunno about the US) airplanes and ships --> will take time. First there should be a good motivation, and I can't think of a better motivation than lots of energy for zero dollars and zero pollution, which is what fusion energy has to offer. In two/three decades, all of the above work on energy coming from fusion reactors. I don't see any other option for humanity at the moment.
Certainly in spot locations. To bring Oil to zero, it would have to be worldwide. Yeah, our railways got bought out/destroyed/blocked by the automotive industry in the US. Mag Lev and electric trains are practically non-existent(except for subways). We have lots of old school slow speed track (diesel engines) which is used mostly for commercial traffic. The one big thing left off of that list were tanks. The Abrams gets gallons per mile, not miles per gallon, and I am hard pressed to see that thing going electric anytime soon. The bright side is, if we convert what we can(domestic automobiles) to electric and expand our drilling, America could reduce/eliminate dependence on foreign oil this decade. That sounds more realistic on a worldwide scale. As a by-product, it will be interesting to see what the world does about the massive poverty, crime, and war you predicted will come to the currently oil-rich totalitarian regimes. I don't see an alternative future for those locations. Unfortunately, when that happens, they will turn into a bigger problem for the rest of the civilized world than they already are. Venezuela used to have a functioning economy and middle class and now, thanks to Chavez, they too will fall when oil goes.
Speaking as someone who once worked in Detroit and helped design automotive systems, while the electric car concept looks great, there are, unfortunately, practical business problems. The most important is the classic chicken/egg issue: You can't sell electric cars until charging stations and PROFITABLE battery replacement stations are everywhere, but you won't have charging stations/battery replacement stations everywhere unless there are plenty of electric cars. The battery replacement stations are like a MacDonalds - they are privately owned businesses, with an owner and employees that needs to make a profit the first day it opens it's doors. They also need a (profitable) support infrastructure to supply the batteries, repair the station equipment when down, etc. No independent businessperson/entrepreneur is going to spend his money on such a business and then sit and hope enough people buy the cars before he goes bankrupt. In the USA, there are also uncharted territories of legal liability to deal with.
I can buy that! Maybe more will commit suicide at a faster rate than they are being born, or someone will introduce them to birth control and living life!
