Since I'm kind of old school and been dealing with forums since I was running one with a 4 modem 2400 baud 486 server with a text based BBS running, I often forget about the little things that we need nowadays to prevent abuse of this great place. Once again I received an infraction for just about the only thing I ever get an infraction for here, replying to a thread with a suitable offer when it should be sent via PM. This made me think, what if, beside the "edit post" button that stays on your post for a while to allow for self moderation, we had a little button that said "Ooops... convert to PM!" With that in front of me, even if I do autopilot post a response, perhaps I might realize it and fix it ahead of time instead of mods catching it several days later. I understand why this rule is in place and I actually agree with it, despite my continued trouble with it.... I guess what they say can be true, even in the younger generations, about teaching old dogs new tricks...... Now I feel OLD! My son better not start making babies now then I'd feel obsolete! What do ya think? A button to convert a post to PM after it was posted? I know you can just delete the post and copy the text into a PM, however a little button there might just be more effective across the board, I know it's likely it would have prevented my latest infraction.
I don't really see the necessity of having a "Ooops... convert to PM!" button IMO when you really don't need to post anyway or for that instance, you should have just sent a PM instead of "auto-piloting" your responses. That saves you an infraction and the mods with their time.
There is a delete button that serves that purpose . What DP might need is harsher rules (thou that might hurt the traffic) and quicker mods . Right now I don't think that 100% of DP's traffic is filtrated .
I'm aware of the delete button. I'm aware of the DP rules. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has old habits that die hard. I've probably made a million posts in different forums over the years, and before a place like this gets so big and full of problematic members, replying to a post with a post is usually how it works. And to have somebody give me red rep and swear at me calling me names, when all I was doing was offering help to somebody who ASKED FOR IT, is down right low. The negative energy in this place is ridiculous, and turns most of the good people away.
