Ok, there are 1000's of blog and wanna be blog applictaions out there. I'm in the process of developing a new one. Yes, there's plenty of competition, but if it wasn't worth doing, so many people wouldn't be doing it, I think. In any case, the question here is which features to include. The basics are what they are, posts, archives, comments, trackbacks, links, you know, the standard stuff. The question is, what else? What kind of features should a blog have that most of them currently don't? Should I include a "skin" system or just make the basic template VERY basic and idiot-easy to figure out how to edit? I guess what I'm looking for is a wish list for a new blog app. Ideas?
Maybe better image management than what wordpress has. Other than that, with all the plugins and skins available, I'm not sure what more could be done to improve on WP2.0. I am interested to hear what others feel. Good luck...
The best feature in any application, is plugins. Make plugins possible and users out there would develop tons of them, adding more features than you ever could by yourself or your team. And that is one of the many reasons why Wordpress' user base is growing exponentially. More users, more plugins/features, leading to even more new users. And by having features as plugins means flexibility fior your users. They need only install what they need. Having said that, I think it's going to be difficult for you to compete with Wordpress. My 2c.
nfzgrld, There is nothing wrong with coming up with you own blogging software - certainly from a developer's growth perspective it can be easy to motivate oneself. However, you may want to look at WordPress and see what functionality is missing or broken and either try to fix it (it is open source) or develop a plug-in for it. Maybe fixing the image management in WP - then you would be a god to hundreds of thousands of WP users.
DUDE! WP is very good, especially in it's niche, it's the best, but if you think it "own all" then you havan't been paying attention to the blog software market lately.
The ability to post to multiple blogs from the single login screen. There are desktop aps (ecto) that do this and the new firefox plugin from perfomancing.com, but that means I need my own computer with me wherever I go. I don't know how technically feasable it is. Just an idea...
I'd be interested in hearing what great deficiencies WP and other blogging platforms have as well. I love WP and while I don't think it is the end-all, be-all, CMS/blogging platforms...it is pretty darn good. Curious to hear why you think there is such a great opportunity to create your own blogging platform.
