I think I'm right in saying that with the exeption of Search Engines and Social Networking sites it is the most visited website in the world. For a long time they have stuck to the 800 x 600 resolution format (sadly the rest of the site is still in the old format, but wow take a look at the new homepage - It is taking functionality and design to a new level, I love it what are your thoughts? www.bbc.co.uk CW
Looks a bit bland...:/ It sticks to good standards on it's design and code, which is a good thing. I wouldn't say it's any more functional than the old site though.
I like it for its simplicity and neatness especially ease of navigation. The most important is it is totally uncluttered by adverts.
Yes BBC have some serious ownage.. Hmm problem is i have to horizontal scroll a bit now because i have sidebar open!
Oooh! Much better than the dreary page they have been using for years. I hope they offer some more customisation options and also roll it out across the rest of the site.
very slow loading here, and I've got broadband naturally. To me it seems to pull off the customization aspect of things very well, but will it be usable or gimmicky after 4 years? I know the big drag and drop sorting of your stuff is what they're after, but once you have it that way you want it it doesn't matter how easy it is to change it.....once you've got it the way you want it you don't mess with it anwyay.
I think it looks a bit too: - bloggy. - much like a social networking site. - generic (or bland as twistedspikes said). - much like it could look dated all too soon. A few bits of possible nitpicking: - the big rounded corners are kind of irritating. - the background colours of the boxes changing seems a bit of a gimmick, but I admit I do quite like it. Having said all that, it looks very easy to use and it's a marked improvement on the old site and finally, on an irrelevant sidenote, as long as they keep the content the along the same lines it should still be a great site. JR
Maybe in England, but not the world. It's a .co.uk domain. Bland statement. .com = most visited worldwide. Google.com, MySpace.com, Facebook.com, Yahoo.com, cnn.com, cnet.com, download.com...all have more traffic.
Well you quoted me as saying "with the exception of Search Engines and Social Networking sites" and then quoted Search Engines and Social Networking sites -nice. OK here a link to the Global top 500 and (almost) with the exception of the afore mentioned it's right up there. http://www.alexa.com/site/ds/top_sites?ts_mode=global&lang=none And yes it is a .co.uk but BBC is a worldwide brand back to you. CW
Obvious n00b webmaster using Alexa to determine traffic and popularity.. Maybe if Alexa actually provided a statistics tool or website monitor service that all "the big sites" used I would believe you.
I am in canada and although there's an ocean between us, there are still BBC followers here and some of their stories end up in our news. BBC is a global brand. it would be silly for something like CTV to be anything but CTV.ca but it sure doesn't limit access to users from other countries. It wasn't till recently that the US got a /us and it's kind of tacky, that's why american companies don't use it.
Get lost - I don't use Alexa - just using it to help reinforce my point, one that you clearly haven't got to grips with - you completely misinterupted my statement and have failed to make a useful one yourself. I don't want to get into a 'across the pond' slanging match but unless you have something useful to say and better still something to back your arguements up then 'hush'! (my that was polite) Anyway back to the actual point of the post - do you like / dislike the site? CW
Allowing the visitor to customize their experience is always a good thing, and it has a ton of that. What it needs though, is a SPLASH of color ;-)
The BBC isnt about colour (and to the previous poster, the BBC will never have ads on any of its technically UK based services) though I think it is ok.... given how long "web parts" (and each other brands/ technologies names for these type of portal sites) have been around I have always been surprised just how few there are... nice to see someone putting at least a little design to them though. They are fairly easy to create but have always been disappointed that there has never been a project that warrants using them as it is only really necessary for a massive site with a diverse content type where realistically people are going to have it as their homepage/ very frequently repeat visited
Beat me to it. I was about to link to that... =P BBC is currently about 60 in traffic ranking. If you look at historical stats, though, it peaked in 2006 at around 17-18. The fact that it's a co.uk domain doesn't mean only British people use it. People worldwide use the BBC for news (including Americans), and I'm sure it's popular in much of the former British Empire. Anyhow, I like the design. However, the javascript is a bit laggy in responding. There's a one second lag time or so between when I click a content box and it starts to drag. It could also use a little color spice-up. - Walkere
