I would not invest too much time learning classic ASP, instead learn the latest .NET technologies. ASP.NET, ASP.NET AJAX, C# or VB.NET, and the .NET Server platform.

ASP means Active Server Page, the script runs on server and generates a page for client or sends data to existing page (ajax). Many languages can be used for client side script(any language yor server can interpret)

.net is great if you are interested in banging out volumes of dry vanilla sites, PHP is best if you want power and creativity. and if you are going to be working on existing sites you will want vbscript.

You can pretty much do the same with asp as you can with php and asp.net in terms of end result. Or at least that's how it seems to me after 8 years of developing with asp. :)
