We are currently spending about 12-15K a month on overture . I want to split that with Google. We are launching a new site in a few weeks so I have to redo the account anyways. The secret with Adwords is to have good copy. If your advert is something people want to click on, you'll get a good CTR and thus be more highly-ranked for less money. If your ad copy is poor, you'll find yourself having to pay much more to get to the top.
