Never knew GoDaddy VDS was Complicated....

    Hey,

I was looking around for a server to set up 11 sites with just a basic design to set up, so I thought why not go with GoDaddy makes sense they host my Domains and they had a cheap-ish solution.

    So :

I sign up to a Virtual Dedicated Server Plan.
Select Simple Control Panel (well it said simple).
Then the guys at HostGator set it up.

I log in and realise "what the hell have I done", I try to set up DNS's but wait a minute how do I point the domains to my VDS - mmmm it says in the "Help" option "if your website is hosted here select this option" - ok so I do.

Wait 24 hours for propogation and zip, zilch, nada the sites are still on the Parking Page - oh OK I realise I may need to set up a Names Server - so I select a domain and set up NS1 and NS2 then I point my domains to it -mmm some guess work time.

Next I try to see if I can add a page - so I start with a Index page and upload a test, OK so now where do I put the sucker, mmmm well public HTML is the norm' isn't it ? well still nothing happens.

Mmmm maybe I set up the domains wrong, I dunno .......

Can anyone help me .... I was so used to HostGator - you sign up and 2 hours later you have a cpanel and log in set to go.

P.S I have left out a few steps above ... but ya get the drift.

it's not complicated at all just request your ip address from the control panel then create your name servers at your domain register using 2 of the 3 ip address provided.

then point your domains to the new name servers.

    um no.
okay first delete the domains you setup in the cpanel to prevent any conflicts later.

did you requested your ip addresses from your cpanel? do that because you will need them later.

next thing to do is register your name servers, below is how to do it with godaddy.

    login to godaddy
    go to my domains

click the domain you want for your name servers (can be any domain)
now find the host summery section it's in the bottom left corner of the screen then click the View/Modify Detail link.

now enter a host name (Host Name 1) this can be anything but most people use ns1 then enter the first ip address on your list of ip address.
for Host Name 2 enter anouther host name most people use ns2 here then enter the next ip address on your list.
    click OK.

thats your name servers setup you will soon get an email from godaddy saying if they registered successfully or not.

after that is done login to your host control panel and create your domains, make sure you have DNS hosting set to ON.

after you have done that you need to point your domains to the name servers you just created.
go to My domains then click the domain then click the name servers button

    now enter your name servers
    ns1.yournameserverdomain.com
    ns2.yournameserverdomain.com

    Ok thanks for that,

I did the above according to their instructions first, I will have another look and make sure it's set up the same as your instructions, I have switched to cpanel instead of the simple control panel - so I will see if that's easier to work with.

    Thanks for your help !

Yup you're right Random' - the VDS is on linux,

The NS servers in cpanel are set to :

    ns1.ip.secureserver.net and ns2. - Default

Should these be changed to :

    ns1.yournameserverdomain.com
    ns2.yournameserverdomain.com

Similar to as nDreamer stated ?

I wanted to test drop page rank domains and see if I can resurrect the PR of these domains, I guess they have well and truelly suffered now.

I asked GoDaddy to set up the optional CPanel for a monthly fee, then they buggered that up to (not me this time) and I had to wait another 24 hours to get that fixed - so now I am ready and have CPanel up.

Nah I didn't call them as I am in another country, I think I have it now, I still had the old NS1 set up on the domains hosted on GoDaddy, so I went back to step one and configured the NS in CPanel to the pre-configured DNS.

So I changed the default :

ns1.ip.secureserver.net and ns2. to the previous set up as defined above by nDreamer and it seemed to work.

Yes this post is confusing, LoL, but that was a good learning curve for me and thanks guys for your help - I Googled aswell and if anyone else finds themselves in this dilema here's a little guide that I referred to :
