.NET vs .COM

    It's 2009, has anything changed?

    What are the major differences?

If .COM is taken, should the company go ahead and get the .NET?

    Does Google care?

Also aside from that all, which large sites has the best reseller accounts?

I don't think google cares in search result positions whether it is a .COM or .NET domain

All google cares about is the content of your website. If google finds that your information is better than your .COM competitor then you'll be positioned ahead of them.

I've seen many sites where google places .com below .net, just because .net site was better and more useful.

It won't affect your search engine rankings; as has already been mentioned, the one with the better content will be listed first.

If the .COM isn't available, and you really want the name, then you should get the .NET. Some say that you should go for a name that isn't taken, and then purchase all three versions of the domain (.COM, .NET, and .ORG).

.com, .net, .org, .tv, and .info are all counted as the same level. Therefore yes the content is all that matters.

the only reason to use .com, is most people assume it as a default when typing an address. It matters only when it comes to direct traffic, not search refferal

No ranking difference between .com and .net.

But, there are differences betwen generic TLDs and Country TLDs:

    1. a country TLD (ex. .es for Spain) cannot target a different country (let us say Mexico). A generic TLD may target any country in the world.

    2. A generic TLD (ex .com) is not shown in the results of "national " searches (let us say, "pages fom UK" searches) if UK has not been selected as country target.

#2 above isn't quite correct. For generic TLDs, the major search engines use the physical location of the server that hosts the site, based on its IP address, to determine its geo-location. So, a generic TLD can certainly appear in any country-specific search as long as the geo-location for that site is a match.

    I agree with everyone above.
However if you were asking which will i got for .net or .info , of course .net all the way.
In the past it seemed to be an urban myth that Google favored COM but it doesnt appear that way.

I think companies will always go with COM , then NET if unavailable :)

    Best of luck dude!

My friend Alexander Dombroff did a study (you can google his name) that showed his .com domains all did better than his .net's, even with similar content. I'll go with a different name before buying a .net.

He may have more backlinks with .com than his .net. It is hard to believe that google will favor .com extension. That does not make sense to me.

.COM and .NET don't differ one bit when it comes to SEO/SERPs
I think it's more of a personal choice, I think .com should be your first preference because more often than not - people would type that :)

Then again, ProBlogger.NET is one of the biggest blogs on the net :)

.com is more popular and I would always have it over .net even if I have to re-think the name.

The reason for this is because a lot of people out there have not learnt enough about the web like like us here at DP. The dotcomboom and genrally having a dot com makes a company/business look much more professional.

    Just my thoughts on this.

Right on. It's no secret that Google prefers .com domains. Just do a few searches on Google for popular terms like "credit cards", "college scholarship", even "acai berry" and you'll see that .com domains dominate the results. The only one that even comes close is .org domains which also seem to rank well.

The worst, by far are .ws, .us and .info domains.

This is because there are very few developed .net sites as compared to .com. Also .com domain is the default extension in browsers and for many net users .com is the only known extension for a website.
But I am sure if you get a decent .net domain and develop it with unique and interesting content, it will get relatively higher ranking as compared to other extension.

Just search asp in google and tell me which site is on top of the result page... :)
