The application and website built on ASP.net with the back end language C#.net are most efficient.
It Really good idea to have Website Platform on ASP.net.

    Thanks for your replies.

this month I got "visual studio 2008 express edition" with a tech magazine but have not installed it though. Will it be sufficient? please recommend which language I should start with? some say VB is easy. also I have XP, will the apps made on XP via visual studio work on Vista?

    Thanks.

Visual studio 2008 is great. I use it at work all the time.
I would recommend going with C# and not VB because C# is much more common in businesses so knowledge in c# will benefit you in the long run.

C# language is the better choice. VB.NET is easier to learn than C#, but VB code looks like a legacy code that adopted to modern programming environment.
You may use Visual Studio 2008 Express Edition ,Visual Web Developer Express Edition and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition for free. All products you can download from microsoft site

Visual Studio Express Editions are the way to go. Microsoft have definitely got the best .Net IDEs as is to be expected.

    C# not VB.Net.

I think the Express Editions include a Visual Web Developer edition that let's you code ASP.Net in C# as well.
