Hi, I've got a domain name in my mind wich is available as a .NET ... but not anymore as a .COM ... I want to drive alot of traffic there and don't know though if it's a good idea to go for a .NET ... Can anyone point out to me what the major disadvantages would be of taking a .NET domainname ? Grs - FOP
Generally, in type-ins, more people are used to the '.com'. As we know the internet is generally considered as Dot Com to the non-internet savvy population. Technically you may lose some traffic to the .com. Also check to see if the domain name in question is a trademark of some big corporation, if so, you could be considered as cyber-squatting. As for Search Engines or click-through links, it really does not really matter.
It depends who is using the .com If its in active use then you might be better choosing another name. Alternatively if the .com is just parked then you should be fine with the .net
Mad is right. On top of that, you could also consider what is the .com themes? is it similar to your site? if yes, do not go for the .net. If not, you may have chance to choose .net too.
If you think it will become popular, better get a .com, for type ins people type .com and you lose traffic
