A very strange phenomenon nowadays is that of westerners "reverting to the faith of their ancestors". What do you think is the main reason for this phenomena: 1) Spiritual: Is there something spiritual in pagan beliefs that is not present in monotheistic ones? 2) Nationalism: Do these people percieve Christianity as a "Middle-Eastern Religion" and adopt pagan belief because they are indigenous to their country? 3) Xenophobia: Is it because Jesus was Jewish and they hate Jews? 4) Militarism: Are pagan faiths seen as tough, brave and "macho" as compared to modern day liberal Christianity? Is this no different from the hippies adoptation of eastern mysticism or is there something more insidious behind this phenomena. Please discuss.
Very complex, just don't know where to start with. "reverting to the faith of their ancestors" from the above - do you associate this with pagan beliefs? I'm not sure what you mean by this.
I don't find it insidious at all. When God died (sometime between Nietsche and Now), for most of humanity, we have longed for magic in our lives. We no longer own the work we do, we no longer connect to the earth or to each other as we did when each of us was interdependent on each other. Now, rather than a web of interconnected need, we bounce off each other as amoebas in a millpond, only there is no one looking through the other end of the scope. Neopaganism, I believe, is that attempt to reach back through those yawning years and reconnect to a vital part of what we've given up by being part of modernity. I think they have a point, personally.
It seems to me that this radical conversion to Neo paganism and related belief systems particularly in western societies relate to the following issues within Christian belief systems: -gay-rights -abortion -Contraception -feminism -radical environmental “protection†Our societies moral codes are changing and traditional Christian ideas just do not fit in with our contemporary viewpoints. This may be a small account of the reason ‘why’ people may be converting. However the debate goes on.
