I've recently come across a job opportunity that involves handling the the on site optimization, link building, content writing, social media handling, and eventually the pay per click side of the business. Quite a bit, its a small business, but large enough to pay me decently. I know the owners personally. (Kind of how I came across the job). I currently work for the company handling other web based tasks. Before I decide to jump into this opportunity, I was wanting to negotiate my pay based on whether my seo work and optimization was able to increase sales and traffic. Short of just looking at sales and traffic over a period of time prior to me starting and after, I want to know if there are any other ways of showing that my work had a dramatic affect on company profits. Things to know: I'm new to SEO (not completely new. I'm about as qualified as a graduating student with no job experience), which is why I'm not as upfront about pay as I would normally be. This is more of a way to get a job doing what I want to do, at the same time help a friend who has little knowledge about growing a website or just doesn't have the time to. If there are things I've not considered or a direction I could be pointed in it would be most helpful! Thanks!
Its important to note that there is a range of on going due diligence that is required through out the course of the process, refactoring of ad campaigns, Google updates and so on. I would do this for a flat figure, certainly since you know them personally. Pay per results is an anomaly found on places like digital point and really takes nothing relevant into account in terms of getting something done. If enough has not been accomplished, you keep at it for a bit but you should never work for less cash. SEO is a never ending on going process. Don't sell yourself short out of the gate. In order to free up time to do things correctly or from a brand based approach requires some funds. hope that helps, I am not real alert yet today lol.. Nigel
Thank you for the insight. What exactly would the job title be for something that envolves so many different tasks? Only reason I ask is to determine a base pay that I can bring to them when I negotiate pay. Thanks!
I would say something like Director of Marketing as what you are doing should most closely resemble that. Contrary to the services section here you can't simply hurl links at the problem. I guess that assumes they don't already have one. Keep in mind you should be running campaigns with folks like bidvertiser and things of that nature as well. SEO should look like building strategic relationships and getting the brand out there. SEO in its default state is typically a waste of time. Nigel
Thank you for all the info. I completely agree that the job is more of a place to build new foundations and relationships for their business. I'm excited to see what I can bring to the table. Thanks Nigel!
No probs, if you want to pm a link to the site in question I can throw some stuff at you. You can go into said meeting fully armed lol.. N.
Search Engine Marketing is just one piece of the puzzle so don't make any promises of increase sales or revenues unless you're in control of all the other variables. Also, you have to make sure that they have their act together as a business. I suggest mapping out the entire sales and marketing process and define the roles, delegate the responsibilities (managed by you or them) and base your pay off that. If you find gaps in the sales funnel, put a price on it and offer to manage it for them. Avoid any type of mystification when it comes to your pay and the services you provide.
