I did a website review of 60 company websites in the marketing area, from one person operations, to global players. There was some very interesting results. Most companies had small to major problems with their websites, which from a potential customers point of view ranged from, not important, through to broken links, email addresses that did not work and complete pages which had disappeared. The most common fault was Search Engine sitemaps, mainly Google xml type. Some sitemaps dated back to 2007, seems like a very neglected area for webmasters. When did you last consider having an independent review of your website sitemap? Sitemaps and other things. Drachsi
People tend to get they have to maintain those things once in a while (That said, single-person small business owners usually have tons of things they need to address so...)
We all have a hundred things we need to do ... and really if you own a small business there is never enough time to get to them all. Site maps should be amongst the least of your priorities, if all your pages are clearly linked to, then search engines will find the quality pages regardless of site maps or not. If you have the time to update then great ... if not then make sure all pages are accessible and move on.
Some clown in 2007 made a claim that sitemaps are not important. I disagree and to prove it I got the 70,000UV per month to prove it. I update my sitemaps monthly and regularly use them to check for broken links. Not that it has anything to do with mystery shoppers..........
I've only bothered to put sitemaps on one site, for that one I've used a plugin and it updates itself whenever I add or remove content. Google actually checks the sitemap for changes, I thought it might need manual resubmitting but apparently not.
If it helps, I have created a sort of step by step guide on Sitemaps It shows the different types and how important they all are. There are automatic solutions to do this for you. Thank you Thomas. If you need somebody to checked out your website and look at the sitemaps, just make contact.
