Negative Effects of 301 on main page for SEO

    Hi,
I am new to dealing with CMS, the site I am looking at uses a 301 on the home page, will this have any neg impact on seo?
I know 301 is the way to go if you have to move a page, but would it not be better to have an actual page there?

Is this common in CMS systems?

    Thanks for any input

301 shouldn't have negative effects if it's correctly implemented and it's not used for cloaking. The problem that I found is when you're redirecting a URL that already has popularity, as I don't think the whole popularity is transferred.

    I suspected that.
So the preferred method is to have an actual page in that url?
I really don't like the idea of the main page having a 301 unless absolutely necessary.
Thanks for your input, and any other comments.

I have never experience any problems when using 301.....organic traffic might drop slowly for a few weeks but thats about it
