    Hi!
I'm thinking of developing a new link directory, for a specific country. For example as categories will be the cities of that country, and subcategories the services available in that city(like, restaurants, hotels, schools, clubs, etc.)

I want your opinion about this idea, if people will be interested in directories like this, because I didn't see on internet this type of directories.

    Thank you!

Its a good idea. It's all in how you go about marketing it. It just may be profitable in the long run. Also, don't worry too much about other people's opinions. There will be a lot of people who will make negative comments and that may discourage you. the best way to see if your idea will be profitable it simply by giving it a try. :)

This is how Yahoo was formed over 15 years ago. It was a large directory of everything interesting on the Internet.... perhaps you can try with a different idea?

There are very few new ideas online. Everyone is re-hashing something someone else did previously. Just try to make your implementation of the idea stand apart. Make it much better than others that people in your country might currently use. Have you studied your competition?

    check out localist.co.nz
and then check out their advertising budget!
All staff drive cars with the companies advertising all over them
They have staff in shopping malls promoting them
They pay to have a stand at major events
They have a very large corporate backer
They are struggling to get traction in a city of 2 million people (high education rates, high internet usage etc)
    They are doing everything right
    yet...
    They probably won't succeed

    Hi Madman90,
It is fine. But According to me, the categories should be the services available in that city(like, restaurants, hotels, schools, clubs, etc.) and the sub categories should be the cities of the country for which you want to create the directory.

    Good Luck

I think that creating a local directory page is a good idea, I have such a directory, but remember that the only limit yourself to the city, and entries do not appear too often, but generally a good idea.

Lots of room for quality local and regional directories but it takes years of hard work to develop one and a great deal of money to effectively market it.

It all comes down on how effectively you promote your directory.

I think your idea has merit, but you will need to really focus on a way to make the concept original, like member contributed photos linked to a map. for example, you could really develop a virtual world approach and take it to a completely new level in the concept of a graphical view port of each city.

In all honesty, there are many ways to make your concept work, you'll just need to put some extra time in laying out what you want your final product to be. You can range from a knowledge base to a social market place or some combination therein as your concept is wide enough to grow and evolve.

I completely disagree. I believe directories will be around for a long time to come and may well out live traditional search engines. A good directory has one major advantage over every single search engine out there - the human element. That one single factor will make sure good directories never die.
