I am trying to find out why do most of Disney's characters use gloves. I've searched all over and can't find a real answer, could someone point me to a link that discusses this?
Do you think it would be so that non-human characters did not have human looking hands? Also at the time Walt Disney started his dynasty women at least wore hats and gloves for dress. Gloves were part of a costume so to speak. Shannon
THere must be some place on the net that has this info... BTW, did you know that the Simpsons characters have only 4 fingers to save time while drawing them?
found this on a website: "My understanding is that gloves were put on black and white cartoon characters to make their hands more visible. The advent of color made this technique obsolete, but the gloves stayed." http://disneyshorts.toonzone.net/years/1929/opryhouse.html makes sense to me
duh, I'm not a newbie, dude, why do you think I posted it here? I have already searched all over the place. But clay's answer seems quite reasonable
Kind of related.... Last time I was in Disney my son asked me what Goofy was. I thought he was a horse, my wife thought he was a dog. So we picked up the phone and dialed the operator (we were in our hotel room) and asked what he was. The operator said, "He's a dog, silly!". I asked why Goofy could talk while Pluto couldn't, she told me that they're different breeds of dogs. My son (4 years old) was satisfied with that answer.
Wow, thanks for that link, Rob! I completely forgot about the Google answers section! I did try to ask the question at Askjeeves and got a bunch of junk as usual, no wonder why nobody uses it.
Are you quoting Stand By Me? I’ve heard a couple of different explanations with the most prevalent being it helps give the character definition. I’ve, also, heard that it made them more human like and that they characters originated when wearing gloves was very fashionable. I doubt there’s an “official answerâ€. The Disney characters were drawn with 4 fingers, too, to save time. I mean it’s like asking why do they wear clothes.
Cool. Well I really and I never knew until now that the use of gloves really have it's practical basis.
Fingers & hands tend to be much more difficult to draw, especially if you are animating, to get them to look proportionate, in perspective, accurate and moving (as well as shadow, knuckles and all those other details). It is much quicker and easier to use a glove or similar to hide the need to add detail. For example: Imagine this as a real hand: http://posters.westbalkanonline.com/speedlist/FP0754 MICKEY MOUSE spot.JPG It will often look wrong because of the exaggarated shape etc.. whereas because its a glove it looks fine.
I think its so they don't leave fingerprints at crime scenes. Disney is just a front for an assasination-for-hire business
