    Hi all,

I have a wallpaper site that is doing the following traffic.

    Month/Uniques/Page views
    Jan / 171 / 309
    Feb / 210 / 390
    Mar / 184 / 400
    Apr / 214 / 496
    May / 247 / 584
    Jun / 434 / 979

I have been trying to sell the wallpapers for a low price but nobody is buying. I put adsense on the site and I'm making about 3 dollars a month.

I'd like suggestions on what I can do to better monetize the increasing traffic I'm getting. The numbers you see above are all organic from Google/Yahoo/MSN.

    What would you do?

With wallpaper sites it is better to try for CPM ads that pay you a certain amount for every 1000 views. Your pageviews are still relatively low, but it could be an option for you to use it in conjunction with Adsense ads.

With your low traffic, you should not worry too much about monetizing your site. Instead, you should try to increase your traffic as much as possible.
You can then think about monetizing it when you get a significant amount of money.
Adsense is fine for the moment. You may want to experiment with different ad placements to get more clicks.

Yea, my first question was what makes your wallpaper so special that I have to pay for it? There are tons, and I mean TONS, of ways of getting wallpaper for free in the internet so why would people want to pay for yours? That might be a good question to ask yourself because you could probably get a lot more traffic to your site if you had free wallpaper. And in the end, you will probably make up the difference in Adsense earnings....

The wallpapers are exclusives from an aviation photographer. It's a niche website that has top ten rankings for many wallpaper keywords related to aviation.

So, when you ask why there is a charge, the reason is because there is expense in creating the content, adjustments in photoshop, and then web hosting.

So if wallpapers don't sell, perhaps there is another angle?

what you need now is more traffic. I would suggest buying more links. not for PR but for traffic purpose. so you need to know where your visitor come from. if those are from SEs like you said. I would suggest you to do SEOs for a better ranking. which can give you more traffic.

I think giving something away to users may bring you traffic. Maybe a monthly free promotion on one of the wall papers. Consider leveraging social networking sites also or at least their search option. Getting a paid review on some blogs may also create some buzz for you.

you shouldn't start with selling wallpapers, give as many high quality wallpapers as you can for free. this way you'll attract a lot of visitors since everybody loves free stuff! after a few months keep the free wallpapers but try to either sell your better ones for an small price or charge something for membership to give access to good wallpapers but keep in mind that yet you need to keep the free ones! after that try to keep it like that for a year and if it worked(will if your wallpapers are good) you can make it paid membership only but yet try to give out some free good wallpapers like once a week or something like that!

What do you think about this:

    1. Free wallpapers (with a site tag)
    2. Pay a fee to get the wallpapers without the tag

Its no use to try to sell wallpapers when there are thousands of free ones which may be as good as the ones you are selling or even better. What you should do is try to improve your traffic.Give free wallpapers and increase the number of visitors as people love free stuff. You could give out a newsletter by making them subscribe before getting the wallpaper. Then, you could earn with affiliate ads from the newsletter. The newsletter would also remind the people to revisit your site which would thus increase your Click-Through-Rates.

It looks as if you are earning slightly more than $3 eCPM on Adsense, which is rather good for your type of site. CPM ads most probably wouldn't benefit you as you will earn far less than that unless you use popups or popunders, which is most probably something that you wouldn't personally want to use.

As suggested, it would be best if you worked on getting more traffic to your site.

Sorry to disappoint you but the wallpaper industry is very competitive and very hard to monetize. Adsense doesn't perform well because you have a website with pictures and not with text content. What may help you is to come with with some nice original wallpapers (not found anywhere else).

Give the wallpapers away for free but bundle them with pay per install software as well and work on getting more traffic to your site. You will get more downloads that way and you will still make money when they install the software. Also run banner ads and many even sell text links if you get enough traffic to your site.
