i want to register one the domain name with 2 words. so you have the choice which one you a prefer to register? .org with no dash or .com with dash? i.e www.mydomain.org (since .com and .net not available) OR www.my-domain.com need you advise before i proceed to buy my selected domain. TQ
I'd probably have to say the - with the .com, although certain types of sites might do better with .org and no dash.
Depends on the domain name itself. if the keyword suits org then go with org. Becuase in my whole lifetime I have never typed in a hypen domains to open a site. Ask this question to yourself how many times have you typed in a hypenated domain name to open a site in your browser. You will get the answer.
I'm picky. I refuse to have anything but a .com. It's pretty much wheter your site will be getting its traffic primarily from search engines or from word of mouth. Search engines, use the dash. Word of mouth, the org I guess. Or think of something else.
com because org will limit you anyway when promoting your site as people associate that extension with charity and non-profit sites, as it was formerly released. I have a dash dot.com because the non-dash is taken and let me tell you that running a google search, it is closer to the original name regardless the dash.
Mystique is right. It seems to me it really depends on what you want to do: -a) "brand-type" website: I'd recommend the .com+dash. Unless there is already a similar site for .com+no-dash (people could get confused and go this competing website). Only use .org or .info if it is applicable to the topic of your site. -b) "rank well": take the .com with the dash. Dash is assimilated as a space by te search engine. -c) "type-in": pick another domain name as type-in on .org is very low and the same applies to names with dashes. Except if i) you site can confused with a .gov (lot of people confuse with .org) or ii) the keyword with the dash can be considered a frequent typo e.g. x-box. But my best recommendation: brainstorm more and get a better .com name without dash. -T
Would other extensions such as .biz, .info, or .us work with your content? I doubt you will find a name with enough targeted, convertable pre-existing type-ins to matter much. Once you leave the .com comfort zone you have the advantage of a much better range of names available. The extension you use can even add meaning such as .info or .tv . There also is the disadvantage of having to educate your market to use the other extension rather than the habitual .com . But that applies mostly to print advertising. If they click, all extensions are equal.
