You could start by building your own website to showcase what you can do. If you really think people are going to be impressed by a page on flickr attached to a gmail account then I think you need to stop smoking that pipe and wake up.
I agree, if you are serious about getting into the web design business the first think you should do is create your own website, that's a must.
Start a portfolio. (use wordpress as CMS) Start networking on sites -forums -myspace -twitter -facebook Help other designers: Write tutorials, or put tutorials on youtube (if you have any raw tutorials created by YOU I would be more then happy to put them up on my design tutorial site.) Enter contests on here and show off your abilities (word of mouth is the best free advertising) When you do get a client, make sure they are 100% satisfied with your work and be friendly with them. They may have connections that could set you up with a line of work. Learn CSS, HTML TIP: one of the best areas I have found is creating custom Myspace layouts for people. (DIV overlays) Let people know that you do graphic/web design work: put it in your signature on forums. hope this helps
Having a site is a must imo. If you can't do it for yourself how are you going to do it for someone else? Also having your own site allows you to market your services to prospective clients.
