I just bought a forum and for some unknown reason it doesn't allow new registrations. How do I enable them?

    hey frymany, try this:

logo into your admin control panel
click vBulletin Options on the left, then click "vBulletin Options" again when the menu expands.

next in the main area you will scroll down a bit until you find "Registration Options" click and open. you should find what your looking for in there.

good luck, i am still new to vb but here my first try www.pocketpcer.com

It really isnt. Its comprhensive, but not complicated. Spend a few days playing with the admin cp - and you'll see its very logical and simple -- just looks daunting.

Uh why would not *not* want it in the database? It's faster (no need to stat the disk for every template file), more scalable (centrally located if you have multiple web servers) and easier to manage on an upgrade (especially with vBulletin 3.5.x's DIFF system).

the only reason would be to reduce the db calls of course. theres another person on these forums that get in the are of 10k uniques a day. he had stated that his mysql mem usage was through the roof and that a gig of ram wasnt enough. now i can understand that if you have 10k traffic a gig prolly isnt enough, but isnt it better to reduce server load where ever possible?

if i am wrong in my concept i would love to be corrected :)

so is there actually less strain on your server using the mysql method of templating, or by switching over to a static template system?

It's actually less strain on the server to do a single SQL query for the templates (which for the most part is going to be memory resident because of how MySQL caches stuff). Reading static template files from disk is going to be more stressful to the server. phpBB's default template uses ~50 files. But even if a single page uses *only* 10 of them, that's 10 unique calls to the disk which is going to require the server to do various underlying things for each file... stat, check permissions, read, etc.

Under low load you aren't going to notice much of a difference either way (disk based or database based), but under high load the database based templating system is going to have the advantage.

As far as someone needing more resources for their forum, it's most definitely not because of templates in the DB. If anything, that would make the resources required less than disk based templating.
